GRC will meet minimal resistance in the 10th from Mason and Scott but I would expect them to get there to Rupp. If they were in the 7th, they would be one of three or four teams in the mix because the 7th region teams will have to battle for three rounds to get out.

 

I would bet if the tourney allowed two teams from each region you would see a lot more 7th,11th region teams winning it all- but they don't!

 

I wouldn't get all warm and fuzzy about the "domination" of the 7th region just yet! Yea, they won a December tournament, practically at home, but it is December. There is a lot of basketball to be played yet! We will see where things shake out the rest of the year. :popcorn:

And the only one in this century. Not saying anything negative about the basketball in Louisville. It's the best all around that the state has to offer, IMO. However, to negate other regions because the 7th is so mighty is hogwash. Proof is in the banners. May be harder to come out of the 7th, and I'll agree it's true. However, that should make one battle tested to say the least. We're not talking attrition like in football here. Should be more banners from the 7th if that's the case. Maybe this is the year.

Gosh, maybe the 7th region can win a state title soon. Hard to believe only one this decade with all that talent.

True, the 7th doesn't win the state as often as it should and some of those times its because the best team from the 7th doesn't get out of the region.

The King of the Bluegrass is more than just a December tournament. USA Today rated it one of the top 10 best Christmas tournaments in the country. It's early, but 7th region teams are the only in state teams to knock off the preseason top 3:

 

Ballard: Scott Co (W 84-81), Holmes (W 60-52)

Trinity: Clark Co (W 70-64)

Eastern: Clark Co (W 77-70)

 

The 7th region is loaded this year.

 

But back to the game. I believe I predicted Eastern would win this one and their athleticism would be the difference. Clark Co has a great team and a huge starting lineup but they struggle with more athletic teams because of their lack of depth. Clark will be fine, as I think Eastern has a very good team, but if they want to make a serious run at the state title, they need to develop some depth. Scott Co and Holmes are in the same boat.

 

With that said, this very well could have been a preview of next year's state championship. Both teams have loaded junior classes.

Two teams from each region? Do you honestly think the schools from the most heavily populated areas are getting screwed with the current system? Teams from Louisville and Lexington have higher enrollments and a wider range of talent to work with and develop. Before the KHSAA will allow something like that to happen, you will be looking a classed system. Do you really want 6 state champions?

Nope! Just pointing out that with the quality iin Lou/Lex I bet you would see multiple champions in a class ssytem come from these areas every year.

The King Of Bluegrass was a very tough and prestigious tournament. Several teams could have won the tournament with break here and there. It was a good field of 16 teams. I thought Clark Co beat the best team in the tournament , Memphis Central and maybe could have won it all if they could have hit their free throws and a few easy shots. The All Tournament Team selected : Tim Peete from Men. Central, Quintrel Morris from Fairdale, Donovan Johnson from Shelby Co, Keisten Jones and Ian Chiles from Ballard, Lyonell Gains and Remy Abell from Eastern, Vinny Zollo and Robbie Stenzel from Clark Co, Martez Harris and Zach McElwain from Seneca, Trae Golden from McEeachern, Donovan Gibbs from Iroquois, Taylor Epley from Trinity and the NVP of the tournament was Josh Sewell of Trinity. Robbie Stenzel received the Ralph Beard Spirit Award.

I agree, the teams we lost to are some of the top teams in the state. We also beat a very good Memphis Central team. As we have seen so far, the top teams are going to get beat this year when they play other quality teams on a given night. I am telling you, if you haven't seen him play this year, you need to. So much more aggressive and active on both ends of the court. His rebounding has been outstanding this year. His stock is going up big time.

Congrats to all the players that made all tourney. Was surprised that Holmes didn't have a player on the list. Very proud of Vinny and Robbie making all tourney and especially proud of Robbie receiving the prestigious Ralph Beard Spirit Award. Just shows what a outstanding player and individual he is.
