How good are the Chargers?

Featured Replies

The San Diego Chargers started the season 2-3, they are now 11-3, after a 9 game winning streak in which they are averaging 29.4 points per. Their defense is giving up 16 points during the winning streak, and Philip Rivers is 179-256 for 2338 yards, 16 touchdowns and 6 interceptions during that streak. After beating two of the better teams in the NFL over the past two weeks-Dallas and Cincinnati, how good are the Chargers? I believe this year will be the year the Chargers get over the hump, and win the Super Bowl. They are playing as good as any team in the NFL, and Rivers is having an MVP-caliber season, throw in that they have proven they can beat Peyton Manning and the Colts in the playoffs, I think this year may just be the year.

Thoughts?

I've said for the past few weeks that they were playing as well as anyone in the league..They're a solid football team.

Can't fault the Bengals, they played hard, Ocho and Palmer both looked good from what little of the game I saw. They are the most dangerous team going into the playoffs, I think this is the year they finally get over the hump and make it to the Super Bowl.

On the second quote: Since you mentioned the Bengals and no mention of the Charges, one would assume you are saying the Bengals would make it to the Super Bowl? But on the first quote you say the Chargers will win the Super Bowl? Two AFC teams in the Super Bowl? Or you changed you mind within 4 hours?

They are as good as anybody in the NFL and either will be home all the way or vs. Colts, whom they have had tremendous success.

The Chargers are definitely a good football team, don't get me wrong. But I just don't have the feeling that they are "definitely" going to win the Super Bowl. Cincinnati played right with them, on their home field, and had a serious chance to win the game. Now somebody will say the good teams find ways to win, and the Chargers did just that. But, IMO, there are several other teams out there, that on any given Sunday, depending on how they play, have a legit chance to beat the Chargers.

I don't see how their pass defense (suspect) stops Indy.

If the playoffs started now I would pick the Chargers to represent the AFC. Your post is dead on though. I would give them a slight advantage over a few others and the Bengals are one of them. Momentum is huge and with two weeks left my opinion could change dramatically.

Their okay but barely won their past two. Cowboys ran the ball down their throats and moved it at will only to not be able to get it across the goaline or through the up rights. Didn't get to see much of yesterday's game but it sounded close. Beat two really good teams, but barely beat them. Thus IMO meaning they are good but not head and shoulders better than any of the other real good teams.

One could argue that the Cowboys should have beat the Chargers, then after beating New Orleans that they could be considered one of the elite teams, but you know thats not happening. Lot of teams real close this season, this point in the year.

I thought I heard an announcer say that Philip Rivers is 17-0 in the month of December:eek:

I apologize, I meant to insert the Chargers in my reply to the game thread, I don't think the Bengals could make it to the Super Bowl. Sorry if I confused you.

True, but the Colts defense didn't do too well against the Jaguars Thursday night. The Chargers have proven they can beat the Colts in the playoffs, and this is the best they've played since Rivers took over for Drew Brees.

Should they meet it would be in Indy.

I'll take Indy.

If that happens....it will be must see TV.

The Chargers are unbelievably thin on the lines. Yesterday they suffered an injury to Jacques Cesaire, and Castillo is always banged up. 3 DL are already out for the year. San Diego now starts a third-string nosetackle (Ian Scott) and two defensive lineman rotate that began the year on the practice squad or other teams (Travis Johnson and Alfonso Boone).

On the offensive line, with the injury to Murczkowski, who was a backup guard playing center, Hardiwick not coming back for a couple of weeks, they are now down to theri third string center (Norman) and are already starting a rookie right guard and second-string right tackle (Dombrowski). San Diego averages only about 3.5 yards per carry running the ball.

San Diego's run defense is very suspect, I actually think the pass D is very good (Jammer, Cromartie, Cason, Weddle, and Ellison keep everything in front). They are getting some good play out of reserve linebackers (Siler and Dobbins).

All of this, by the way, is why Rivers should be the MVP.

Of course, I am pulling for the Super Chargers to win it all.

The Bengals mentality this year is to run the ball down your throats. They have 2 very good backs in Benson and LJ. The fact that they threw for 300 yards yesterday tells you that they didn't think SD's pass defense was very good. They completely went away from what has won them 9 games. That's telling.
