Shutitdown
Newport came into this game averaging 84 points a game. Ouch.
Tiger1
About as expected isn't it? Pretty much so. Newport is just not on the same talent level as Holmes.
bigmarc78
J Johnson 15, Pittman 13, R Johnson 10, Rice 8, Avery 8, Hayes 3, Slusher 2 for Holmes, not sure about Newport. Pittman and J Johnson owed the glass and Pittman had 5 or 6 blocks as well
bigmarc78
Holmes played in the half court and slowed the game down much of the first half and was up 23-21 at halftime. In the second half they really opened it up and got up and down the court and played at a much more uptempo pace and it really paid off, they outscored Newport 36-20 that half and really took control of the game early on in that half with an 8-0 run that put them up 10. The Hulk.......2
Holmes seems to respond to a challenge, probably why they are defending state champs.
Walter
Pittman was the difference for Holmes in the first half. He had 9 at the half and 5 of those came in the last 2 minutes after Newport took a 19-18 lead. Avery played well tonight coming off the bench. Rice got the start but with Slusher in foul trouble the whole game, Avery came in and did a nice job at both ends of the floor. Holmes defense continues to impress. I believe Newport was averaging close to 80 ppg and were held to just 41 tonight. Newport was absolutely horrible at the free throw line. They had to have missed atleast 10 free throws, possibly more.

Newport missed alot of easy shots and should have lead at the half. Holmes turned it on in the second half to put the game away.
NKYThreeFer
I kind of expected this one to be closer. I thought this high-scoring, athletic Newport team would match up better with Holmes

Yea Newport missed a lot of shots in the lane, but I'd say that had to do with the fact that they were having to shoot over both Pittman (6'8) and Rice (6'6). Holmes was contesting everything in the paint. I'm surprised Holmes slowed it down in the first half. When they pushed the tempo in the second half, Newport had no answer. Walter
Did either of the three, Johnson brothers, or Pittman, have any dunks in the game:dancingpa Pittman had a pretty nice one hand tomahawk jam over a defender at the end of the game...other than that, no dunks.
