Plasma TV

Featured Replies

I am also in the market after the first of the year and the TV I have settled on is the

58" Panasonic 1080 plasma at HH Gregg. Panasonic is rated number 1 overall for Plasma TVs and the 58" just fits inside the entertainment center. Price on it right now is 1599.00 but I look for it to drop after Christmas, and as already stated on here price is always negotiable at HH Gregg.

I have #1 54 inch Panny and #10 42 inch Panny on the list...I LOVE THEM! Panny & Samsung are very close, can't go wrong either way!

I've got a less than a year used Sony Bravia 40' LCD 1080p HDTV if anybody is interested...

Great TV, I just lucked into a 46' that I couldn't turn down.

How much would you be looking to get for it?

LCD tv's are way better and more durable than Plasma now. Just sayin!

How do you figure? When they first came out, LCDs were much longer lasting than plasmas. However, now they are practically even. Plus, for sports action, I prefer a plasma over the motion blur of a LCD.

I don't get much blur in my LCD.

I have 3 LCD Tv's and have never seen a motion blur in mine. Everyone I know has an LCD and none of them have ever had this problem either. LCD's have a brighter picture and IMO are more durable than Plasma. I'm not saying that Plasma TV's are horrible, but if I had to choose I'd buy an LCD every time.

Plasma's are a little better on the wallet and would be a great TV. I'm more of an LCD person but if I couldn't afford one I'd have absolutely no problem going with a Plasma.

I agree that they're essentially even.

I went with an LCD because, when I purchased it, I was logging some serious hours playing PS3 with roomates. At that time, there were still concerns about the burn-in on a plasma, although they were dwindling. I think they're non-existant now.

I, personally, have not seen a LCD without motion blur, especially during a basketball game. Now, I had a rear projection in the past, and it annoyed the crap out of me, so maybe just the slightest blur bothers me more. When selecting a TV for my living room, I was able to see a Samsung 750 (I think) and the Panasonic plasma side-by-side. I was able to watch some different movies and sporting events on both. I was able to notice the blur, and that's ultimately what made me go with the plasma. The 120hz on the LCDs are a huge improvement, but IMO, didn't compare to the 480hz on the plasma. That's just my personal opinion when I went to pick out mine.

LCD's may have a slightly brighter picture, but plasmas have deeper blacks. So, it's a give and take with that.

Plasmas do have a reflective screen, which most LCDs don't which is a huge positive if you're placing it in a bright room. However, the plasma has better viewing angles.

As far as durability, I don't know about that. Both are rated for 60,000 viewing hours now. A few years back, plasmas were only rated for about 20,000, so they've improved. And the burn-in is no longer a factor. The plasmas will cost you a little more on the electric bill.

It basically comes down to personal preference. Each has it's positives and negatives, but I really don't think anyone can say that one is definitely better than the other. I actually have one of each as we recently picked up a LCD after our old tube TV crapped out on us. I don't mind the LCD, but for my main viewing area, I'd stick with plasma. Again, just a personal opinion.

HH Gregg store manager told me he has two plasmas. Told me after I already bought one at another store. He said I'd have nothing else.

Thanks for the help! I think I've found a 50 inch Samsung Plasma 1080 for about a grand, it looks like its going to be the winner.

How much would you be looking to get for it?

I've got an offer of $650 for it right now but I'd like a bit more for it. Paid $1,299 for it about this time last year.

I'd say you better sell it for that and move on. The prices on new ones are only going to drop even more.
