Practice gear - $40 x 30

Travel pullover, shooting shirt - $75 x 30

I don't think they want to eliminate fundraisers, .... just junk food fund raisers. This time in Laurel County, apparently 10 of the 12 requests for fundraiser approvals were not junk food. There are alternatives. The South Laurel teacher with the brick sale fundraiser seems to have the right idea.

Are the alternatives better? Could a kid sell bricks or candy better?

Fact is a lot of "junk" food is relatively inexpensive and people like it. That makes for a good fundraiser.

I understand that 'junk food' sells, ... but in a state as unhealthy as KY, do we want to promote this?

I understand fundraising. And I have sold 'junk food' for fund raisers before. But my question is should we promote 'junk food' with one hand while telling kids they need to eat healthy on the other? If we want to raise kids who understand how to reverse the trend of unhealthy lifestyles which have our state towards the bottom of the 'health' chart, is this not disingenious?

Junk food, fast food, and Coke are not what is making us unhealthy.

Lack of parenting and a society that has to have everything right here, right now is.

Kids were healthier when we didn't limit what they could eat at school........

We NEVER had soda pop and snacks when I was in school like they have now.

Is junk food the only think making us unhealthy? Absolutely not. But they are a major factor.

I agree on the lack of parenting, .... but putting junk food in the schools takes some of the control parent's have away.

I cannot support selling more junk and promoting it in the schools.

Have you seen what they serve to kids for school lunch, and especially breakfast, these days? Does it really matter if they sell a little more junk food than what they're already serving?

I once saw funnel cakes as the main dish for breakfast at an elementary school but yet at my kids high school they can't have salt but have a coffee shop in the school that sells caffeinated and sugary drinks. Talk about mixed messages Ever eat a baked potato without salt? But I digress. Sadly the candy sales are easy and effective. Fruit just doesn't do as well.

Coffee isn't bad for you in moderation. Neither is caffeine.

What about a school cafeteria that only serves 1% milk. Not all kids are overweight, some actually need to gain. Talking about mixed messages... You can't have whole or 2% milk but you can dip out all the mac and cheese you want or how about a big cinnamon roll? Is the 1% milk some kind of fed mandate? May as well make them drink water. I really don't like kids dipping their own food either.

If your talking about the standard fund raising candy bar, I rarely eat the ones I buy. I buy them because I want to donate money to the organization.

I think this whole notion that selling junk food as a fund raiser is in someway wrong is a bit ridiculous. It's a candy bar...not crack.

How many people would want to buy heads of lettuce or carrot sticks from the ball teams ?

In my time, we've sold:

Christmas Wreaths and Christmas Garland (real, not fake)

Wrapping Paper

Candles

Ponsettias

Fruit

Avon

Candy

The items that sold the best were:

Avon

Wrapping Paper

Christmas Wreathes

Fruit

Poinsettias

Candles

Candy

Over the years as well, we've paid tons of money in fees for sports, cleats, swim suits, fins, kick boards, catchers helmets, baseball gloves, food, hotels, bus trips....

The point is, there are things that will sell better than candy, and there's always the alternative of paying for stuff.
