Two words.....Brett Hamblem!!!!! He played on that team in 2000 and IMO the best all around player to come through. He could do everything and pretty much couldn't be covered when he was playing the wideout. Just ask the Trinty fans about how he pretty much single handily won that game against them in the Recreation bowl in Mt Sterling.... A real game changer!!!! I think he even finished 3rd or 4th that year right behind Gino Guiduli(SP) of Highlands for Mr. Football. Highlands had 2 that year finish pretty high in the balloting. 1998, Jared Lorenzen wins Mr. Football with Tight End Derek Smith of Highlands finishing 3rd or 4th behind him. That was special couple of years right there people. Hard to compare 1998-2000 to 2007-2009.

 

Mitchell would have trumped Hamblin if he played 4 years with the Birds. Drake Bruns has a lil Mike in him. Can't wait to see him play some O probably as soon as next year. This Birds team is so good because they truely play together as one unit. They don't a ton of D-1 seniors. Although Bruns is D-1 caliber I can tell you that right now.

Fun player to watch. He did it all. Wonder where he is these days. Last I heard he was on the UC football roster, then I never heard of him again.

Not so sure. Mitchell was exceptional at Highlands, but Hamblin was so perfectly suited for the kind of teams the Birds had back then. The difference between them was that Mike continued to develop in college. I think Brett would have been better served to have gone to a school like Ohio University instead of UK, but I'm sure that's hard to ignore if you've grown up as a Wildcat fan.

I'd give Hamblin the edge as a high school player, however slight. (Uh, but don't tell Mike. Okay?:eek:)

Some of these posts are quite similar to ones we had on 07. Like this year Highlands hosted the playoffs, and a couple of teams with great records and high expectations rolled into the Fort, sincerely believing that the Birds were in for a shock. The two teams that Highlands hosted in the quarters and semis had a combined record of 22-3. The combined score for those two games was 101-33. Total for all 4 games was 191-33. Tell me why this year will turn out differently from that year?

 

Hey, Lincoln County came for the semi's in 2007 but WE DID NOT engage in pre-game trash talk. Those of us from Lincoln County who had been there in 1979 and 1981, and are fans of the Bluebirds still today, quashed any attempts for a thread like this one to get started.

What-you mean they don't have 22 D1 players? Reading all the Highlands post you would think they could beat Kentucky. Highlands is Highlands but Pulaski will bring in a group of young men that have been underdogs all year. I don't think your Mighty Bluebird stadium will scare the Maroons. Regardless of the outcome, I think you will be impressed with the Maroons players and their heart.:sssh:

 

If they based D1 on heart, skill , dedication ,teamwork , work ethic , determination, motivation, pride , loyalty , we would have about 80 D1 players .Too bad they basically go by size, speed and ability. Anyway ,22 D1 players mean nothing if they don't play together or have all thats listed above. I believe this team has plenty of everything they need (see above) and more to bring back that 19TH state trophy!!!! Oh by the way,Highlands has played and beat lots of teams with many D1 players on their teams,when Highlands had few to none on their team. This year for Highlands they may have more than 1 or 2 going D1 and that is an exception .

It's like going into combat against an opponent that hasn't lost a battle and has defeated one of the best armies in the world. He wins because he has all the weapons and the best commanders. Lets face it,PC is scared. Anyone who thinks the PC kids aren't scared isn't being honest with themselves. I don't blame them a bit,I'd be scared too!:scared:

Even during the warm ups, they will look and say "we can compete with this team." But once the games starts, it doesn't matter if it's kickoff or receive at that moment--maybe not until that first series. But they will quickly realize what they are in store for. You can not prepare for the quickness, the strength, the difference in talent as a whole by an overall team play!

 

I really think the score will get nasty quick, with Pulaski trying to pass and going three and outs while Highlands will March the field at will. This will make for a very long game! Look for clock possession to be like 3 to 1 Highlands.

 

When it's all said and done, one thing that Pulaski will walk away with is, not a feeling of defeat--defeat won't even be in their vocabulary--but the desire to get to the level of play, tradition and respect that Highlands has. I would just like to say, go play the game you love, enjoy the moment in time, and you will always remember the opportunity that was before you. Also remember, I think Highlands is a nationally ranked top 10 team in America!

I disagree. I was on a team that was the first in history to make it this far for their school and we were in a very similar situation going against a big time program. Weren't a bit scared as we felt we were invincible and ready to make history. I'm betting PC is feeling the same. BTW, we lost. :idunno:

 

Now when they get out there and experience the atmosphere first hand I expect they may get awfully nervous. At that point it can be very overwhelming and things very well may get out of hand in a hurray if they can't handle it.

 

I expect the Birds to win comfortably since I have faith in the coaches and senior leadership on this team. They're staying focused and overlooking no one. Go Birds!

Hey hey hey... you used that prediction last week. Can't you be more creative?
