There seems to be a growing number of football games between Kentucky and Ohio schools. In Kentucky is this competition unique between the two states. Northern Kentucky and Louisville schools seem to be playing Ohio schools on a regular basis.

 

Does this happen in other parts of the state? Why not?

 

I know of no cross state games between Indiana schools and Louisville schools. Yet we are right accross the river.

I think Western KY schools have always played TN teams and Southern Indiana squads. Not certain but check schedules by: Henderson, Christian County, Ft Campbell, Mayfield among others.

We played Lawrence North from IN this season.

 

For what it's worth though, the only IN schools worth playing are the ones that are way up north. For T and X we are better off playing Ohio schools that are traditionally better and closer to home.

Here in northeastern Kentucky the Ashland Tomcats and Russell Red Devils always plays a very powerful Ironton Tigers team. Ironton has won a few state titles and many regional titles. Thay are coached by the winningest coach in Ohio. Greenup Co just down the road always plays a Portsmouth, Ohio team or Weelersburg, Ohio. And this year thay played Dawson Bryant HS, Ohio.

Long ago, long ago, Oldham County had an ongoing series with Providence, IN, which was coached by Gene Sartini and always had good teams.

 

I can't remember the last team we played from across the river, though. I can't remember South Oldham ever playing a team from out of state, and North Oldham has never in its history played an out-of-state team. (OK, OK, it's only been 7 seasons!)

 

By and large, the southern Indiana (Clarksville / New Albany / Jeffersonville) schools don't usually play the Louisville-area schools much.

 

I do know the Evansville schools play several KY schools. And sometimes they have some pretty decent teams; I know Reitz and Castle both have had solid programs.

Fort Campbell recently started playing TN schools again, thier first three games this season were against TN schools (two from Nashville and one from nearby Clarksville).

Kind of related: have any Kentucky schools ever played Indianapolis Cathedral, Cleveland St. Ignatious, Cleveland Glenville, Massillon, or Canton McKinley? They seem to have programs somewhat similar to the perennial powerhouses in Greater Cincinnati and Louisville.

There was an interesting piece in the Courier-Journal toward the beginning of the HS season discussing FB in So. Indiana and why there just isn't a very deep tradition in this area (save for a handful of schools) as opposed to Indianapolis and points north. Of course, a lot of it has to do with the bulk of the population lying north of I-70.

Or could it be that the best players from across the river play for teams in Louisville. :D

Before that, the last time FC played a TN school was in 2004 against Greenbrier, a 7-13 loss for the Falcons. Coach Berner has tried to schedule more, things just didn't work out until this year, but I am sure you already know this Bill.

In the far west (Jackson Purchase) you get teams that play NW TN schools as well as some teams from Southern Illinois. Occasionally we'll play some Missouri squads. Paducah Tilghman played a St Louis team this year.
