Interesting playoff tidbits

I do think Larkey from NL should be coach of the year in his district, even without making the playoffs...

I agree, but Blazer is right, not making the playoffs really hurts this cause. Considering what he did this year, I think he was the COY. However, his dad also deserves consideration as does Coach Black at Whitley and Coach Howard at LCC. There are some awfully good coaches in this district right now. PCC has had it's best seasons with Browne as the coach and Arnett has done a very good job at Clay, especially after losing record breaking QB Zack Lewis and going to a run oriented attack.

Im pretty sure Belfry didnt lose to any of them in this district. FWIW, I believe Belfry beat two of the four.

I stand corrected. Belfry beat Whitley & LCC this season.

How bad would it be to

1) Re district - Make the districts more equal in terms of #'s

2) Only top 3 teams in each district make playoffs with #1's getting byes

Why do we keep wanting to limit the number of football teams making the playoffs when it is the ONLY sport in the state where every team does not make the playoffs? I don't want LESS football in KY, ... I want MORE!!!

Oh I thought you were wanting Hoops to start quicker:D

Let everyone in and shorten the season by one game. Aligning the districts is very important. Alot of districts are out of the way or overly loaded, IMHO:deadhorse:

You have listed some terrible teams above.

If you want to prove that the districts overall record is NOT a result of playing weak schedules tell us who their non-district wins came against. My guess there are alot of wins over teams like Lynn Camp, Moore, Middlesboro, and few or none over the Lex. Cath, Bell County, Scott County and Corbin.

Not to mention playing in a six (6) team district benefited their record as well since all four (4) of the teams could post wins over North Laurel and Clay County, neither of which was very good.

Terrible teams? That shows a lack of credibilty on your behalf. Those are above and beyond good teams for non-district play.

The statement was made earlier that 5AD8 played a cupcake non district schedule, I pointed out the teams, no one said this district beat them all, heck that would be near impossible. You have to consider where these teams were the last few years and even last year and then credit them with playing tough through their brutal schedules. NL matched their win total this year from the previous 4 years, Whitley County I believe is 2 years removed of having back to back 2 win seasons. A new school in Harlan County and Letcher is only a few years old, with Clay County and Perry County Central not having very much football tradition, it is a true testament to how difficult this district was this season and no doubt from top to bottom the most leveled in terms of quality across the Commonwealth.

The comment was made by Jim Shue that MAYBE the fact that they all four (4) teams in this district have winning records is the result of playing a "crummy" non-district schedule. You took exception to that and I said that it wasn't that far from being correct. I am not going to do the research (too much time), but I suspect that the gaudy records came from playing teams on your list named:

Pulaski County

Knox Central

Hazard

Breathitt County

Southwestern

Louisville Moore

Lynn Camp

Middlesboro

South Laurel

And not teams named:

Bell County

Corbin

Scott County

Lexington Catholic

Belfy

That first list isn't exactly "murders' row".

No, but when you play them in combination with each other it isn't a cake walk either, therefore, giving thse teams in 5AD8 some losses. Bottom line is that those are some solid teams listed and if you cannot agree with that and the fact that the district had a great overall record and they didn't win based on cupcakes then we can't have a normal conversation because it wouldn't make sense to me.

I think these numbers suggest otherwise. Looks like a somewhat dismal record for the teams they scheduled.

(First set of numbers is the team's non-district record. The second is the combined record of the non-district teams they scheduled. The third is the combined record of the non-district teams they defeated.)

Letcher County Central (6-1) Scheduled: (31-39) Defeated: (24-36)

South Laurel (W) 4-6

Middlesboro (W) 3-7

Hazard (W) 6-4

Belfry home (L) 7-3

Clay County (W) 4-6

North Laurel (W) 5-5

Moore (W) 2-8

Whitley County (4-3) Scheduled: (39-31) Defeated: (17-23)

Lexington Catholic (L) 6-4

Lynn Camp (W) 4-6

Bell County (L) 9-1

Belfry (L) 7-3

Clay County (W) 4-6

North Laurel (W) 5-5

Rockcastle County (W) 4-6

Harlan County (5-2) Scheduled: (34-35) Defeated: (18-31)

Southwestern (L) 7-3

Lee County-Jonesville, VA (W) 1-8

Leslie County (W) 3-7

Powell Valley, VA (W) 5-5

North Laurel (W) 5-5

Clay County (W) 4-6

Bell County (L) 9-1

Perry County Central (7-0) Scheduled: (22-48) Defeated: (22-48)

Casey County (W) 3-7

Knott County Central (W) 1-9

Breathitt County away (W) 5-5

Logan, WV (W) 1-9

North Laurel (W) 5-5

Clay County (W) 4-6

Leslie County (W) 3-7

Overall (22-6) Scheduled: (126-153) Defeated: (81-138)

BF, what are the numbers suggesting otherwise? That the teams I listed are not quality teams. I never once said anything about beating all these teams, only that all the district teams scheduled fairly tough opponents and they won some and like all teams lost some. I still do not see the argument, just because Breathitt County is 5-5, are you suggesting they are not quality, because Hazard is 6-4 are they not quality, because Rockcastle County is 4-6are they not quality because Southwestern is 7-3 are they not quality, or what about Pulaski County they are 8-3, oh I forgot they are not a quality team either.

Plus you left off 2 other district teams that played a tough schedule.

North Laurel: 28-26

Pulaski County 8-3

Knox Central 7-4

Corbin 9-2

South Laurel 4-7

Jackson County 0-10

Clay County: 29-25

Lynn Camp 4-7

Scott County 8-3

Hazard 6-4

South Laurel 4-7

Knox Central 7-4

This district alone beat a #1 seed numerous times, a #2 seed numerous times and a #3 seed numerous times in some pretty tough districts.

I used only the four district winners, since winning a district playoff spot implies that you have played, and were better than, those who didn't make the playoffs in your district. And I think that makes the point even more strongly. The fact is, their collective schedules were, overall, very weak. And they performed rather badly against those schedules. For example: The teams scheduled 25 different opponents. Of those, only eleven had a winning record this season.

The list of schools that these teams in 5AD8 scheduled are pretty tough, throw your records out because they do not mean anything when every single school above is still playing in the playoffs, except 1 and this district eliminated them from the playoffs. BF, I know you are a NKY fan and may not know that much about this mountain district but it has historically been pretty bad, it is almost like you are enjoying putting salt on a great season for every team in this district. It has basically been a consensus all year long that this district is one of the most balanced and toughest in the state, especially considering there are 6 teams in it, when all 6 would've been a very dangerous playoff team.

Good luck to the 5AD8 schools this weekend.

someone else had just responded with my very similiar response

The "only three" part was pertaining to the teams scheduled by the four district winners. That number was accurate. As you'll see in the post as I had ammended it, there were 11 winning teams scheduled by all six teams, yet that is still out of the 25 teams that they played!

As far as my enjoying pointing this out -- no. But you chided another poster for pointing out that this district did not play a very strong schedule. The numbers, no matter how you look at them, bear that out. There's no joy to be taken in it, but it is the truth.
