Can Beshear talk about anything but Casinos?

As bad as the economy is right now, the only real solution Governor Beshear seems to be talking about is casinos. Does the man have any other plans that can help the state? Why is he so obsessed with casinos and slot machines at horse tracks. I'm sorry, but I'm just of the opinion if Kentucky's horse racing was as superior as we've all been told it is our entire lives, we could compete without slot machines. But that's just me, I'll get off my soap box now.

Why not get casinos? It may not be all he can talk about, but I can't think of an easier fix.

I'm not saying I'm completely against casinos it's just that's all Beshear talks about. And it may be an easy fix for now but it won't be a good long term fix. Way back when they told everyone that would listen the lottery would pay for education for generations and it is definitely not doing that.

It's probably all he talks about because that was the main platform of his campaign.

Not an easy fix at all. As more and more surrounding states get them the market isn't going to expand that much, hence the income for future casinos will be much smaller than those operating in the past.

That said, I think KY should get on board.

In this day and age money talks especially with our current economy. The industry will leave the state if they can make better money elsewhere, it's as simple as that.

Good call.

How much do you know about the industry? I know far less than a lot of people, but I know a little. If you owned a horse that runs in $10,000 claiming races and the purse at Turfway Park is $10,000 but you can run against the same level of horses in a $10,000 claimer an hour away in Indiana and the purse is $16,000 where would you as an owner run your horse?

I know very little about the industry itself other than how I've been told we are far superior in the quality of our tracks and horses here in Kentucky my entire life. And it just seems to me if our product is that far superior then we could offer the bigger purses without slot machines.

Are people looking for a superior product or a good time? Can't they gamble in Ohio just as easy a driving an hour away to Keeneland? Isn't this the same thing that causes people to go to Legends games instead of Reds games?

Maybe the Kentuckians who told you how great the Kentucky horse racing industry is was...wrong? Exaggerating? Living in the past?

I think the whole gambling issue comes down to change. Other states have changed & now, in order to compete with those states, we must do something similar or find a better alternative.

Are there any alternatives?

We were superior. All of the states that competed against Kentucky understood this. They couldn't compete so they found a way to compete by adding casino gambling. This increased purses and made it worth while to race other places than Kentucky.

I think they need to put it on a ballot and let the people decide. Maybe have a special election with it. To me that makes sense.

Amen, I have been preaching plebiscite on this issue all the way through!

Here is the issue with the public vote now, the dems will not allow it, not because they are worried about it losing, but because every conservative will come out to vote against it, and vote for the Rep. running for office and vote the dems out. It will not be on the ballot this year, but gaming will come closer this session than it ever has to being passed.
