County Schools Without Football

Just because I am bored at work I looked at the 08-09 enrollments from KHSAA that they used for male enrollment and the football classes. All of these schools show between 100 - 200 boys and 2 of them show having over 200 boys. So I guess that would put each one of them in class A if they had football. There were a lot of school with less # of boys that play football.

Kind of like Trigg County? :D
Yes, and Greenville also. Greenville built their stadium in 1980 and it took several years to get bleachers. The first game I saw there, I remember playing football with other kids amongst the fans.

Trigg County had a few bleachers on their old field in the 1960s but moved to their new stadium in 1971.

Cumberland County did play football at least as late as 1971. Warren Central played them from 1968-1971. Cumberland County played in 1A, District One.

But it doesn't mean they are good.

Lets take Livingston County for example.

Their economy is mostly tourist driven and they have a lot of transient traffic. Their population is 9,800 but the county does not have a city larger than 1,500. 60% of the people there work outside of Livingston County. That tells me there is very little corporate support for Livingston County starting a football team. Again, the start up costs for a rural school to begin a football program is huge.

Did Muhlenberg North and South share a stadium before consolidation?

^ Yes. The same stadium at old Greenville Middle School.

I think Lyon County tried to start a youth league years ago, but just couldn't generate enough interest.

If a kid at Lyon really, really, really wants to play football, he usually ends up at Caldwell County, best I can tell.

Financially, I think it would be difficult for a small school to start a football program from scratch. Seeing the small crowds at some places, I wonder how they cover their expenses now.

Sometimes in the grand scheme of things, less is more.

I am not sure about the other schools listed, but I would assume that football would intefere with open gym at Elliott County.

Robertson County (Deming is the school there) has a total county population of about 2,200. Just not feasible to play football. 1/128th the population of Fayette County.

Dang, I overlooked several. So does anybody know why they dont have football or if they had it in the past? Would be interesting to know.

The high school I went to never had it, and as far as I know, none of the pre-consolidation schools did either. Too small back then, but we could have had a team when I was in HS 20 years ago.

I would have definitely been bored if I went to one of them in High School. What do you do in the fall? Run cross country?

My school just got it within the past five years. I absolutely hated that we didn't have football, and begged to be sent somewhere to play.

Elliot County is a basketball school. And they would not be competitive in football and they know it.

Robertson County has an estimated 2008 population of 2202. According to the KHSAA, there are five high schools in Kentucky with 2-year average enrollments over 2,000 (Dunbar, Henry Clay, Eastern, Henderson County, Lafayette).

Deming can barely field a baseball team, so like you said it is impossible for them to have a football team. I do enjoy seeing them win in other sports considering thier size and the fact that they are ususally the underdog.

There was a time when Deming was a Kentucky high-school superpower in Debate.
