The Massey Ratings would have Covington Holy Cross ranked fifth in Class A, behind Lexington Christian, Crittenden County, Mayfield and Beechwood.

 

The Cantrall Ratings would have Holy Cross fourth, behind Lexington Christian, Beechwood and Mayfield and just ahead of Crittenden County and Hazard.

 

I would say that both are reasonable rankings.

For one thing, Mayfield is much better than they were a year ago. Crittenden County also returns something like 16 or 17 starters, much more than Beechwood did.

 

In other words, I don't know how valid a comparsion last year really is.

Going by the depth chart for the state finals last year, Beechwood returned four starters on offense and three on defense.

Crittenden returned 18 starters, but most are 2 way guys, and the "4" they lost were Courtney and Robertson, both of which were just studs. But our line is very good and with JD at QB, anything is possible but I worry about this team..

Actually, about the same ... except that one of the returnees was Mainello, a two-way starter and a Division I line recruit. Slusher was quite a player, too, from what I saw in the title game last year.

Also, Matt Miller who was a two way starter on the line and is playing D1 ball at Brown. The line lost quite a bit from last year. And, as I said earlier, that is the reason for the struggles against the big schools and their size.

Robertson was definitely a stud. Clearly the best player on last year's team from what I saw. A very strong, tough player.

I think good points are being made on both sides of the above debate concerning Beechwood. Beechwood did score the most points against Highlands this season. Check out Highlands' scores on the scoreboard, the opponents they have played and the points their defense has allowed. Beechwood's offense is clicking very well and is probably more explosive this year than last. The defense has struggled against teams with big offensive lines but changes have been made so we will see if they work the next two weeks.

 

Yes, Beechwood has played the toughest schedule in 1A. The only team in 1A that might be able to beat Holy Cross, Dixie or Cov Cath is LCA. That "pretty decent" Holy Cross team beat Pikeville 32-14 in Pikeville, beat Lou. Holy Cross 26-10 and beat Bellevue 36-20.

 

Yes, the district teams played so far may not appear real strong. But I would say Dayton, Brossart and Walton Verona are better than any other KY 1A opponent Crittenden County and Mayfield have played and Ludlow is 2-3 TD's better than those opponents.

 

Just how good Beechwood is now will show in the next two weeks - Bellevue, then New Cath.

 

I called that game and although I thought the Beechies did achieve some success against he Birds Defense at times I also thought the Birds looked like they lacked desire and were dreadful. I was extremely concerned for the Birds after that game but they seemed to have turned over a new leaf and that was during the St. X game.

 

With that said, Beechwood did have success with their spread formation and with Rigdon running keepers. I think if the two teams played next week that Highlands would shut them out PERIOD.

Beechwood loses starters every year. They reload just as if they never lost a single one. That's why they are Beechwood. It doesn't matter who they lose because the following season you could see someone step in and be better than the previous person. These arguements are going to be made just about every season if Mayfield, Crittenden, and Bechwood continue their same schedule. Because Mayfield will always beat teams like Fulton. And Beechwood will always lose to teams like Highlands(except on a few occasions maybe). Bottomline bieng nobody in 1A right now could beat any of the teams Beechwood has lost to.

Not saying they aren't good teams, but, neither is a powerhouse either, except in name in CCs case. I don't consider 2a-Holy Cross a power either, another pretty decent team, nothing more, nothing less and the Beechies were pushed and then some against them. Last years Beechwood team beats this years HCross team by 30+. As far as winning big in district, give me a break, please. It's certainly not like Dayton, Ludlow, BBrossart and WVerona are anything to brag about. I could name over 50 teams in Ky that could put up similar #s against those teams and thats calling off the dogs early 2nd half...

I don't doubt that Mayfield and Covington Holy Cross would be a good game. But to act as if Mayfield wouldn't have a chance against them is ludicrous.

If you look at the strength of schedules Beechwood vs Mayfield. It don't compare. Mayfield is a very very good team. I'm not knocking them. Please get that straight. But Look at the teams records you have played vs Beechwood. The Fulton schools. Neither could beat any Northern team. Thats two. #3. Ballard Memorial has won two games and lost six games by an avg of 28 ppg. #4. Calloway Co 3 wins They lose by an avg of 27.2 ppg. #5 Paducah T. 3 wins 6 loses. So to compare is crazy. That being said. I think Mayfield it an awesome team. And they will prove it friday night. As will Beechwood.
