October 3, 200917 yr As much as I never agree with acemona, and I think ace will confirm this, acemona is right in this in my estimation. Much like the coach who took players to a revival, this gives an indication a degree of favoritism towards one faith or another. While Christmas in America is largely secular and Christianity took a number of things wholesale from pagan religions when creating the festivals surrounding Christmas it is still identified with Christianity. It isn't freedom from religion it is freedom from any form of governmental preference towards religion.

After all, it is a CHRISTmas tree. Not a winter tree or a festival tree or a festivus tree... Why celebrate CHRISTmas as a national holiday? Why celebrate Thanksgiving since we thank God (a Christian celebration) as a national holiday?

October 3, 200917 yr This is utterly stupid to me to ban decorating a Christmas tree at the capitol. You would think lawmakers could find something better to do with their time.
October 3, 200917 yr Leave it to the Christians to bring Christ into a day that celebrates his birth.

I agree, I do not understand the purpose of Christmas as a national holiday. Thanksgiving is less about religion and more of a harvest festival, which occur in every culture(at least every agrarian culture around the world. Do you know the history of the majority of the traditions for Christmas RTS?
October 3, 200917 yr Leave it to the Christians to bring Christ into a day that celebrates his birth. Ah yes the birth of Mithra that was co-opted by the early church to tell those celebrating both that and Saturnalia that they were actually celebrating the birth of Christ.
October 3, 200917 yr When did freedom of religion get twisted around to mean freedom from religion? Probably about the time when the non-Christian population of this country decided it didn't want to be marginalized as second-class citizens anymore and didn't want to have the tyranny that is the majority beat its traditions and holidays through everyone's heads, whether welcomed or not. :idunno:

Personally, I prefer the Festivus pole. Anyone up for the "airing of grievances" or the "feats of strength"? Festivus for the rest of us!:clap::clap:

Do you know the history of the majority of the traditions for Christmas RTS? Most, why? "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,..." The Dems are cowards IMO, always trying to appease a few whiners at the expense of everyone else. What they're doing here is they're preventing the expression of Christianity on a Christmas tree. If they really have a problem with religious ornaments on the tree, they shouldn't have a Christmas tree at all. What makes non believers ideals more relevant than those of believers? The Dems don't want to offend those who do not believe in God, but it's okay to offend the millions that do believe in God. Hmmm, typical PC crap at it's finest. What will the tree be adorned with, Obama ornaments?
October 3, 200917 yr Here's an interesting read on historical bans on Christmas from Christian Groups: http://www.talk2action.org/story/2008/11/22/164412/93/Front_Page/The_Religious_Right_s_War_on_Christmas_Began_Centuries_Ago The "war on Christmas" traces back, historically, to Calvinist bans on the celebration of Christmas which began in Geneva and then migrated, with the spread of Calvinist theological views, to Scotland, where Christmas was banned in 1583. As Amy McNeese writes, in an article first published in the Church of Scotland magazine, Life & Work that may be one of the best treatments of the War on Christmas, in an historical account of the Scottish ban on Christmas that only was lifted in the 1950's,

If they don't want Christmas off, tell them to report to work that day.
