Gannon had a great breakdown of Russell and has offered to help him but the smart Raiders want him to stay away. He said the biggest flaws after breaking down film were:

1. Changing offensive coordinators so much.

2. No go to WR's and constantly changing them.

3. He throws much better in the gun which makes sense if you think about him doing well in his LSU days.

(It is pretty well known that he isn't doing the little things in the classroom either).

I think if he dedicates himself (that's a BIG if), he gets some stability as far as a coordinator and WR's then he could be really good. He is as gifted from a talent standpoint as any QB in the league. He's got a hose! He is overweight right now which goes back to dedication.

Because we've watched him play.

It did skyrocket, but it was mainly due to his Sugar Bowl performance. His value was moreso high because it was an awful QB class. If you remember, the next QB drafted was Brady Quinn. He would have slipped to the second round had Cleveland not traded up for him. The only other QB in the draft that has come close to solidifying himself as a starting QB is Trent Edwards. He was drafted a few rounds in. Kevin Kolb was also that year and maybe the 3rd QB taken and has probably been the most successful (if you would even call it that) behind Edwards.

I was just amazed that so many people jumped on Russell the way they did. It wasn't just Oakland. I'm sure there were a few teams with enough sense to realize what he was, but had the Raiders passed, somebody would have snagged him early.

In all fairness no one hardly ever knows what QB's will actually pan out in the NFL. I mean obviously no one thought Tom Brady would be much of a QB in the NFL at all, because he stayed till the 6th round.

He's got the size, strength, athleticism, as well as IMO solid mechanics. His decision making is some of the worst I've ever seen though.

 

With possibly the worst accuracy of any QB in recent memory. Chad Pennington can't throw the ball 30 yards with the wind at his back, but he is very accurate and gives his team a chance.

 

I think you're both right. His size, strength and arm are second to none. And, his athleticism is very good for a man his size.

 

However, OR is correct as well. His accuracy and touch are horrible. And, I'm not sure that's something you can teach or learn. Obviously, with repetition, it could improve, but I think there's a limit as to how far he could take it.

 

And, as everyone else has correctly noted, his decision making is as bad as I've ever seen from a starting NFL QB. You know how gunslingers like Romo, Cutler and Favre will make throws sometimes that make you wonder what on earth they were thinking...JaMarcus is like that almost all the time.

 

To be honest, considering how terrible his decision making is, I think his equally poor accuracy is a good thing for Oakland. Otherwise, he'd throw more picks. Half the time he's so far off only the fans have a realistic chance at catching the football.

 

Some guys have it and some guys don't, and you can usually tell early on. Look at the young rising stars at QB...Rodgers, Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez...you know. Russell is now in his third season and he's been given ample opportunity to show us something...anything.

 

To play QB in the league, you have to be able to process information quickly and make the correct decision in a split second. Then you deliver the football. Russell can do neither. Recognize defenses, understand how to attack, make an adjustment if necessary, then make the throw. He hasn't shown me that he can read defenses and he sure can't get the ball where it needs to be consistently.

 

There is some validity to the changing coaches and lack of quality WR's argument, but it doesn't go too far. Perhaps I'd buy into it more if he'd show some noticeable improvement. As it is, I think he may be getting worse.

Most of the busts are guys who were very good, if not great, college football players. Couch, Leaf, Quinn...all were great in college. Russell wasn't. He had amazing physical gifts, but considering what he had to work with at LSU, never showed any signs of being a franchise QB.

Your right however sometimes underachievers in college with talent, finally figure it out in the Pro's. You really just never know. Referring back to Tom Brady I mean you can say he was an underachiever in college, and had a hard time even holding onto his job. So you really just never know how a QB will turn out. It also didn't help as someone said, that the QB class was so weak that year. So it probably helped made him look even better and a good guy to take a chance on. Or else maybe in another year he wouldn't have been taken then, and maybe not even in the first round.

Just watch a game. It is very obvious that he has no idea how to keep up with what is going on at the NFL level.
