Does Highlands routinely play the Lexington (Henry Clay, Bryan Station, Lex Cath) or the Louisville (Male, Trinity and St X) schools?

 

Any chance they move up to 6A?

As Henry stated, there is zero chance of Highlands getting permitted to move up to 6A by the KHSAA.

 

Highlands played Station last year in the playoffs and won in a thrilling last minute score. They played Lex Cath in the regular season in 07 and 08. In 07 it was a very close game the first half. I think Highlands ended up winning by 14. In 08 I believe Highlands won 41-0. In 05 Lex Cath beat Highlands 14-0 in the playoffs. Highlands last played Lou X in 06. In what was basically a one score game most of the game, X won by two touchdowns. In 05, Lou X slaughtered Highlands the week after Colerain did the same. The last time Highlands played Trinity was in 2000 and Highlands won pretty easily. Highlands scrimmages Male (in game conditions). This year Highlands was winning by about 40 points at half. In the second half, Highlands played JV players and Male kept it starters in and narrowed the margin of victory rather severely. Highlands has played Colerain in 05 (as mentioned above Colerain won easily after being up only one point at half) and last year (Colerain won by 15). Highlands has played Elder several times, with all games being pretty close. The last match up was in 06 when Highlands beat Elder in every phase of the game except the scoreboard (which were basically the words of Elder's coach, not mine).

This is just a comment on the poll. It seems unlikely that if this poll was to used in predicting who would win a head-to-head battle, that Highlands likely wouldn't get 80% of the vote, yet here they stand when only conducting a hypothetical. Interesting.

Good point but I would bet Highlands would get 65-70% of the vote in a head to head matchup poll. You can only go by what has happened on the field and right now it is hard to say Louisville St. X could beat Highlands, especially with the disparity of their performances against Cincy St. X.

Since that head to head isn't going to happen this year, then the best available means of speculating who is better when you are doing a ranking is to use comparable opponent results. Highlands beat Cinti X (rather handily; much more handily than the score would indicate and that's coming from a whole lot of Bomber fans on Yappi. Most of them aren't making excuses for the loss and are freely admitting Highlands had the much better team) and both Lou X and T lost to the Bombers. So it's quite logical and understandable how and why Highlands should at this point be considered the no. 1 team in the state. Of course if Highlands lays an egg in the upcoming weeks and Lou X does not, then such ranking should and will be re-addressed.

Where is the other option so I can vote for Bell County? J/K, at this point it appears Highlands would deserve to be #1.

If I understand your logic, then St. X and Trinity would both have to play Highlands and beat them to be considered the No. 1 in the state, is that correct?

 

Since that won't happen and in football as a practical matter you can't narrow it down by settling it on the field until every team in the state but one school champion loses their last game, the next best indication would be comparative scores (particularly where they all played against the same Xcellent team on three consecutive weeks) and by that comparison, there is a clear best team in the state.

 

I agree that comparative scores can be very misleading for all kinds of reasons and really often are not a very indication of comparative strength in general (e.g., most would agree that the fact Beechwood scored 20 points against Highalnds doesn't mean they have a better offense than St. X that only scored 7 (no offense intended to Beechwood just using for example purposes)). That being said, a win versus fairly convincing losses on consecutive weeks seems to be the best information available for making this comparison today and leads to the clear conclusion reflected in the poll. Doesn't mean that would necessarily happen if they played head to head. Heck, if they played each other every week all season both teams would almost surely win some and lose some.

 

In the end, unless you are in the same classification where it is settled by a state champion being determined on the field all the polls including this one are just the opinions of various people of who is better (this, of course is also the problem (my view) or beauty (opinions of some others) with Div. I college football), and as said in a movie "opinions vary". So if your opinion varies with the consensus of the poll above your entitled and, as with most opinions, one persons' usually doesn't change anybody else's mind.

Although I think Highlands has to be considered #1 as of now, this "debate" may get more interesting as the season marches on. There will be two more common opponents to use for comparison - Manual and Covington Catholic.

Exactly and Highlands has not fared very well against St.X last last few times they have met. This is all pure speculation until they play which is not going to happen.
