W.Ky Big & Small school rankings - separate

Featured Replies

Not disputing Graysons schedule. Not really familiar enough to know who they played or beat, just stating my reasoning for ranking them as I did and using Lone Oak as an example because the biggest knock on them was playing teams like Todd Central, Fulton Co, Webster, etc in the non-district portion of there schedule, basically, a very weak schedule and played the same up until this year where they added Green Co and Lex Catholic. So, alot of folks questioned them because of it and they ended up being for real. Possibly, Grayson is moving toward that same type of success. I would say the win over WCentral last year(albeit, they were down) is a better win than Caldwell and pretty much on the same scale as Calloway...

I just think you're dead wrong on that one. I don't see how you can equate a win over a 3-8 team that wasn't even playing it's best personnel to a win over two genuinely good teams. Is it the cache of the name that made it a better win than Caldwell and on the scale as Calloway? What was it about Grayson's performance that made it so great?

Two years ago, two of Lone Oak's first four wins were over a Caldwell County team that went 7-4 and a Calloway County team that was a year away from a berth in the state semifinals.

Has Grayson beaten anyone of that caliber so far? Their six wins are against teams with a combined record of 8-27, and at least two of those wins are against other teams on Grayson's schedule. Four of those eight wins are Hancock County's, and those four wins are against teams with a combined 3-19 record.

It's one thing for a 4A school of 850 kids to play an A-2A schedule. It's another for a school of 1,200 enrollment to do it.

Grayson gets two chances over the next few weeks to justify your ranking. We'll see how those turn out.

I really don't know if Grayson County deserves a top 10 ranking for sure or not - but you can't knock the kids on their team for their schedule. All you can do is evaluate what they did against the schedule they've been given.

And - to their credit - they've absolutely demolished in every way possible each team on their schedule. There doesn't appear to be a single win where they were fortunate to eke out a victory over a lesser team.

I guess I'm always amazed at how many people want to say that a team's good because it lost to good teams - or a team's bad because it only beat bad teams. You have to look a lot further than that.

To be sure, we'll know whether or not they are a legitimate team or not after they finish out their schedule, with powerhouse Bowling Green coming up Friday, and games against Warren Central and a respectable Edmonson County team all coming up. I'm not sure the BG game will tell us all that much - very good teams often lose big to BG - but certainly, if Grayson makes it a game, they will have made a statement, win or lose. I'm making no predictions...but I think Grayson, simply by taking care of business (something an awful lot of teams aren't doing) merits a good hard look.

No one is knocking the Grayson kids. All we're saying is that it's awfully premature to rank them as high as some people want simply because they've cleaned house on a very weak schedule. There are a whole lot of teams that would dominate that schedule like Grayson has.

"Taking care of business" is a relative term ... Grayson hasn't had much, if any, "business" to take care of.

Actually, it was Fulton City that Lone Oak beat, not Fulton County. And that Fulton City team was 7-0 and coming off a win over Mayfield when Lone Oak demolished them.

Lone Oak didn't play Webster, either.

Based on what? Warren Central had their worst team in recent history last season. The Calloway team that Lone Oak beat was pretty good and won a playoff game, then reached the state semifinals the next season.

The wins aren't even close to being comparable.

In looking at Graysons schedule, I'd guess Barren Co is probably the best team they've beaten...They won that one 38-6...Barren played a good (5-0) Bullitt Central team to 21-7...That same BC team beat a decent Bullitt East team as well as a decent Pulaski Co and Waggoner teams...Not great teams, but, not bad teams either...I prefer to reward teams for there record and performance rather than reward teams for getting hammered by good teams...

If a team went 0-10 vs the likes of BGreen, Owensboro, Ft Campbell, Highlands, Boyle Co, etc, and then lost a 1st round playoff game to a 1a team like Jenkins, would they be considered a good team just because they played a great schedule..I don't think so... If they were competitive is those games, I may rethink it and give that some consideration...

If you look at the teams I ranked behind Grayson, I just haven't been that overly impressed with those...Henderson Co, 2 losses and 2 close wins against average at best opposition in Madville and Daviess Co...Greenwood, lost 2 of last 3. Lost to a FSimpson team thats average, at best and another lower class school...Graves Co, who started the year 3-0, but, has lost 2 straight to smaller classification schools and barely beat a down 2a team in Trigg...WCentral, you beat them last year and have more coming back this year than they do...Just don't see it as that big a stretch putting them in the Top 10....

Enough said.

Has Grayson beaten anyone the caliber of Madisonville and Daviess?

Graves Co, who started the year 3-0, but, has lost 2 straight to smaller classification schools
Mayfield is a top-two team in Class A. Lone Oak is a top-five team in Class 4A. Those are hardly just "smaller classification schools" ... unlike most of Grayson's schedule.

Would last years Warren Central have competed in 2a as well as Caldwells team from 2 yrs ago...I say yes...That team wasn't 4-0 when they played Lone Oak, matter of fact, they lost there 1st 2 games, then lost to a Heath team in the playoffs who had a losing record, not to mention got hammered by Mayfield, who was average, at best, that year(they lost to Fulton City, remember). I'm just not buying into Caldwell being a quality win that year for the Oakers and Fulton City either. They were a decent 1a school, nothing more, nothing less.

Okay, I was using those type quality teams as examples, if you want actual non dustrict teams that Lone Oak played, here ya go, Union Co(4-8), Obion Central, Tn(0-10), Todd Central(1-9), Reidland(1-9), Heath(5-7) and then Caldwell and Fulton City, which I've already mentioned...Thats 1 1a school, 4 2a schools and 1 3a school, not sure what class Obion would be considered, but, at 0-10, does it really matter...Some of teams on Graysons schedule, I have no idea about, but, I'd be very hard pressed to think it would be any worse than the one Lone Oak had 2 yrs ago...Would almost be impossible...I'd also be hard-pressed to think Caldwell would be any better than WCentral, despite a poor year and record. I bet they'd still beat Heath and defeat every team that Caldwell did that year...Calloway was a decent team, but, that was it and that was a district game late in the year and Grayson will be playing some decent to good teams coming up, as well...

I saw LO play friday and they are a good football team. The muddy field didnt help their cause.

Mayfield is a legit contender for the state title. Most people who have been around Mayfield football know when we have a real good shot for a title and this is one one of those years. Mayfield has its flaws as all teams do.

Do any of the small-school teams Grayson has beaten stack up with that Caldwell team?

Does Warren Central's team last year, with all the personnel issues and problems, stack up with the Calloway team of 2007?

I would say not.

I'm not touting Lone Oak's schedule in 2007 as being anything that tough ... but it's much better than the one Grayson has played so far. That is the only point I am making.

Seriously, I won't dispute your knowledge. I just feel that althogh the Cougars may not have played any powers, and they may not beat Warren Central or Bowling Green, the level of dismissal is unwarranted at this point. For the first time (that I'm aware of) in quite some time, they have a team that actually has a 2nd and 3rd string...and those guys can score as well. I am not in any way saying they are next in line to a state championship. But I do think that (without having seen them), their record is good...very good...and worthy of consideration this year, at this point.

I don't think that anyone disputes that Grayson has made some strides with their program, only that one particular poster here is vastly overrating their accomplishments to this point.

For what it's worth, these are how the Massey Ratings (power ratings) rank the 4A-6A teams in western Kentucky ... and remember, the Masseys even count out-of-state games.

2. Owensboro ... 29.20

3. Christian County ... 24.47

4. Lone Oak ... 16.29

5. Henderson County ... 15.67

6. Greenwood ... 14.31

7. Warren Central ... 11.68

8. Allen County ... 10.65

9. Franklin-Simpson ... 10.06

10. Daviess County ... 9.82

11. Apollo ... 5.40

12. Madisonville ... 5.33

13. Hopkinsville ... 4.27

14. Graves County ... 3.11

15. Grayson County ... 2.98

16. Calloway County ... 0.72

17. Warren East ... -0.73

18. Hopkins Central ... -1.15

19. Marshall County ... -10.77

20. Muhlenberg County ... -11.17

21. Barren County ... -14.25

22. Logan County ... -14.83

23. Ohio County ... -16.42

How Hopkinsville is above Graves County is beyond me. Actually, how Marshall County is not last is also beyond me

Hopkinsville and Graves have one common opponent ... Hoptown beat Tilghman 17-14 and Graves beat the Tornado 26-21.

Marshall is bad, but so is Ohio ...

Small schools:

1-Fort Campbell

2-Monroe County

3-Mayfield

4-Green County

5-Murray

6-Crittenden County

7-Paducah Tilghman

8-Glasgow

9-Heath

10-Caldwell County
