Despite my avatar I have no skin in this game, but I can tell you that this year's Highlands team is IMO substantially better than last years Highlands team and Friday night proved it. There is no magic north of the river, and I cannot see any scenario whereby Highlands would not win more often than lose Vs St. X this year unless they had a key player injury. Highlands lacks the depth of a St. X, but I have witnessed the overall team speed of the 'Birds current group from up very close and it is breathtaking -- much better than last year's group.

3. Cincy X was flat.

 

4. The Cincy X coaching staff was guilty of the same mistake they made a couple of years ago against Trinity at Cincy X (LINK to that thread for reference). They approached the game like a scrimmage (or at least wanted to work on their passing game)

 

Apparently, "passing game" at X means "screen pass" elsewhere.

Just more proof that Ohio football is VERY over rated or KY's top teams are WAY under rated. The team that is supposedly one of the top 10 in the COUNTRY gets beat by a public school with a 3A enrollment...

 

Did anyone watch the Lakeland vs. De La Salle game? I'm sorry, those teams were moving at a different speed thn Ohio's beloved Collerain, Elder, and St. X...now that I've seen them all play, the three afore mentioned would be 20+ dogs to Lakeland and De La Salle.

 

Just glad we don't have to listen to how great Ohio football is anymore, you know why...'cause the Birds just smacked Ohio's #2 and sent them back across the river where they belong. :isurrender:

Indeed. Congratulations to Highlands on their first ever victory against the Big Boys across the river. No wonder it was such a big deal...Highlands winning a game against the Cincy powers comes along only slightly more often than Halley's comet!! :thumb::laugh:

 

It was a solid win over a very good team. Please don't make any more out of it than that. Try and remember who the state champs lost their only game to last year.

Your point is valid. As I mentioned, it could have happened against anyone but lets not ignore the facts. The Cincy D1 powers are, without question, bigger, stronger and faster than anyone routinely on Highlands schedule. Well, when you have players getting hit harder and with greater force than what they usually are, chances for injury are increased. It's actually pretty simple, if you think about it.

 

And more facts, look at the history of games between Highlands and the Cincy D1 powers. Look at the in-game injuries Highlands suffers and then their follow-up results....it's not good. Specific example, 2005 Highlands vs. Colerain. Played @ PBS in that event thing. Long story short, the Cards pummeled the Birds to the tune of 45-14 and completely demolished your #1 and #2 QB's in the process. Highlands lost 2 of it's next three games and got shut out in the 3rd round of the playoffs.

All I know is as soon as Highlands stepped on the field for warm ups X had no chance.

It happened right at my feet, and it was just a freak thing where his arm bent the wrong way. It could have happened if he'd been there all by himself.

In fact, I told my St. Xavier buddy before the season I was worried for his Bombers on this very game. I thought Highlands had a real shot in August. Actually, Highlands typically does well (in terms of winning state) during the years that they play teams from Ohio... in 1999 they lose to Elder and win state, in 2000 they lose to Elder and win state, in 2001, 2002 and 2003 they don't play any Ohio teams and don't win state for any of those years, in 2004 they lose to Elder and win state.

 

You are right about 2005... HHS lost to Colerain and did not win state. And in 2006 HHS lost to Elder and did not win state; so these two years go against the trend.

 

However, in 2007 HHS beat Trotwood-Madison and then won state, and last year HHS lost to Colerain and won state.

 

So, as you can see, usually HHS does well with winning titles when they play Ohio teams... we'll see if the trend holds up this year.

Actually, what surprised me most about the Highlands-X game was that Highlands managed to win and still made some pretty significant mistakes and had to deal with some significant adversity... I believe they had two fumbles lost inside the 5-yard line (by their star player, nonetheless), and got intercepted by X at the one-yard line. Plus, they had to play most of the fourth quarter without their starting QB who happened to be the player of the game. I realize that Saint X's defense had a lot to do with their great goal-line stands, but seriously if HHS picks up two more yards in this game (one yard on two different drives), then the game is a blowout... mindboggling.

 

This shows you the importance of great defense and special teams play for Highlands!!!

Guru, you can add to your 'Perfect Storm' list that St X also had the funeral of one of their classmates this morning. That is alot to deal with for anyone, let alone teenagers. While not wanting to take anything away from Highlands on their win, it is understandable why St X looked flat or not really into this game. Good Luck to both teams the rest of the way.
