I think the one big factor not listed in the perfect storm is the players. Highlands has arguably the best talent they have ever had led by several D1 recruits and that is why they won this game. The coaches can game plan their rears off but if the players aren't in place who have the talent to make it happen against the level of talent St. X. brought, then Highlands loses. Kudos to the players for all their efforts and thanks to the good Lord for giving them the talent they have that enabled them to win this game.

I have a question about this game and I guess this the place to ask it because it could be another bullet point on the perfect storm list.

 

How much did it help that X had already played Trinity and Lou StX?

 

I'm thinking primarily of film availability but also to a lesser degree, scouting opportunity. Not being familiar with GCL habits, but I'm guessing it may be tough for a KY school to secure a film trade with GCL schools. Did having 2 KY sources make it a little easier to get film?

Highlands had much more speed than St.X.As for size,St.X O-line had a 60+ pound weight advantage,but are soft and got worked over all night.Did anyone notice 5-9 175 lb. DL Cam Deirig take it to all world OT Matt James play after play.:ylsuper:

Wow, Cincy St. X has a brutal schedule. Imagine that, St. X, Trinity, Highlands, then Elder. Wow.

A foot out of bounds? Really? That is just 1/3 of a yard.

 

It looked like he was hit in bounds and drug out of bounds. I thought he was horse-collared but I couldn't tell about the facemask in the quick look I got on TV. I haven't re-watched it but it didn't look intentional or flagrant to me.

Bardo was hit inbounds but was tackled after he was off the field.

All things thrown together, it was the perfect storm as stated. CF you are well aware of the talent levels and I agree that the D1 Ohio schools would normally and I would say 90% win these games. It is just a numbers game. Spoke to Guru after the game and stated then that HHS defense played fundamentally "night and day" better in this game than any this year. They tackled well, kept assignments and stayed in their lanes all night. X was pressured by their speed and skill and did not make major adjustments for that, and it came back to bite them. But lets not get out of touch with the reality of the whole thing. Numbers will win out in most cases, but occasionally they do not. CF keep the Cards rolling and keep the good and realistic posts coming.

Actually, I'd say that even without their starting QB Highlands may still be favored to win the state title... CardinalsFan, I think Class 5A is a bit down this year and Highlands is very talented and very deep for Kentucky standards.

 

Also, to answer your question about whether it was worth it, players get hurt all the time, and I don't think it's possible to say that Highlands would not have an injury issue if they did not play Saint X... the same thing could happen while they are playing a weak team.

 

There seems to be a lot of unsubstantiated speculation about this injury that varies widely... so it's too early to say what the ramifications of this will be. First thing's first for Highlands... prepare for Dixie next week then heal up during the bye week.

I see nothing more than a 17 year old kid playing football.Trying to stop a touchdown at all costs.I've known Will since he was 10.He's a great kid and I would never want anything bad to happen to him,but to say this was anything more than the game of football is false in my opinion.
