September 21, 200917 yr Georgetown is a great school. It's a college town all to itself but Lexington is 20 minutes away so you have a small town feel but access to a nice city. Plus it's about an hour or so from Northern Ky which means your daughter could be home if needed but far enough away to feel like she's left the nest. Negatives - the dorms aren't great.

I hear that over and over and over from everyone we talk to about Georgetown and is one of the main reasons we haven't visited. If it's that bad a situation, you would think the school would upgrade the facilities, as it is no doubt affecting their ability to attract students.
September 21, 200917 yr I am on the hunt helping my daughter, she wants to go away to college but attend a college with a small campus. She initially looked at Berea and fell in love with what she researched about them. Unfortunetly, I don't think she will qualify under their financial need criteria. Any suggestions of some colleges that I can point her to? She wants to study something in the psychology field. Thanks for any help. Is she definitely staying in Kentucky? University of Evansville is a great small campus. Beautiful! I know that it's expensive, but my son got a very good scholarship there with only a 26 on his ACT. He had a 4.0 GPA, and lots of extracurriculars on his HS resume to add as well. They don't technically match KEES money, but we were able to negotiate additional aid in the same amount. Don't rule out schools like Bellarmine, Lindsey Wilson, and University of Evansville. Although private, they use other criteria than standardized test scores in awarding aid. For instance, my son's scholarship @ UE is worth approximately 5 times what he was offered at UL. He was also offered a similar scholarship at Bellarmine that was, hands down, more significant than UL.
September 21, 200917 yr Just click on this link. The debate will be put to rest. http://www.hanover.edu
September 21, 200917 yr To me, it would come down to Transy or Centre. And that wouldn't be much of a debate, because Transy is a wet campus in a wet county, and Centre is dry. Then again, I'm a student and you are a parent. And I go to UK and its only Monday, so my BAC is technically still above the legal limit, probably. So take my post with a grain of salt.
September 21, 200917 yr If you don't mind going out of state a great school is Tusculum College. My daughter and son-in-law graduated from there. It's in Greenville TN. about 25 miles west of Johnson City. The unique thing about is, that you take one class at a time for 18 days. Then you have a 4 day break and take another class. You only have to concentrate on one class at a time, instead of 15-18hrs per semester.

Danville is not dry anymore.
September 21, 200917 yr I have a son at Morehead, and he loves it. I have a son at UK, and he loves it. I have a niece at Murray St, and she loves it. Of the places I visited in Kentucky with my sons, I liked Murray the best. But that was just me. In the end we visited a bunch of schools, in and out of the state. I told them what I could afford as far as assistance was concerned. They both had 6 or 7 schools that they liked that fit into the range and they made their chuices based on their own set of criteria. i didn't try to steer them one way or the other. Both live on campus and both love it, as does my niece. In the end neither wanted to be too far from home. There are some beautiful schools with fantastic academics in the Carolinas. I was certain my oldest was going to go to Catawba College, but in the end he chose Morehead. Morehead is very good about academic money. they want to bring good people in. I'm assuming her GPA is good. If she can get a 25 and has a 3.8 or higher GPA, she would be an almost certain 50% tuition at Morehead plus her KEES.
September 21, 200917 yr Danville is not dry anymore. When did that change? I heard they were switching to "moist" (beer at gas stations?) but the last few times I've been there, we had to drive back to Nicholasville for the goods. As far as I knew, Boyle County and Garrard County were both dry.

I don't think that means you can buy it at the gas station...
September 21, 200917 yr Author She would prefer to steer clear of the "party" scene. She is not into that at all. She currently has a 3.85 GPA and is in the top 15% of her class taking all advance and college prep classes. She has a good resume of extra-curricular activities and community service which she hopes will also help her. There have been some great ideas that I will pass along to her to look at. THANKS!!!

Well then they are moist now, because Applebees and O'Charleys serve liquor and beer. But (last time I was there) it was never sold as gas stations or supermarkets.

From experience there is a party scene at practically every school we've mentioned. I will say that Centre and Georgetown are VERY greek compared to the rest of the schools I've seen on this list. The only one I can think of that has virtually zero party scene is Campbellsville.
September 21, 200917 yr Bellarmine is another campus that is well worth looking at, but it is also extremely expensive. My daughter is a freshman at Bellarmine. It is very nice.
