This is like the perfect storm. Every week, CovCath gets a team that is worse than the previous week and they keep winning. They are in the middle of a great run. The schedulers that be look like genious's. Question is will they be able to keep it going against Dixie and HHS? CovCath will crush NewCath by 28 at least.

 

NCC will have to play awfully bad to get beat like that but anythings possible. Last week NCC dominated Campbell County's line and still lost.

In light of the prior post about CovCath's schedule this year, what would last year's CovCath team's record have been at this point if they were playing this year's schedule? I think it would be the same 2-3, with losses to Ryle, Lex Cath and LaSalle, and with wins over Campbell Co and Beechwood.

 

Conversely, if this year's team had played last year's schedule, I think the record would be 2-3 vs the 3-2 record that last year's team posted, with losses to Mooney, NCC (they were much, much better last year than this year) and Highlands, and with wins over Dixie and Scott. Even if I'm wrong about NCC, the record would be the same.

 

Which begs the question: is the optimism about CovCath this year, perhaps misguided or pre-mature at this point?

Erpenbeck has been labeled on here by some as one dimensional. The stats are in and he's 5th in NKY in passing with 742 yards and 7th in rushing with 600 yards. He has 9 TD's. No QB touches him in all purpose yards. Could make the argument for the best QB "threat" in NKY.

You are correct on the assumptions about the record.

 

The difference, and thus the excitement and optimism, is the level of play even in the losses and the general feeling around the entire program. Call it the intangibles.

Erpenbeck has been labeled on here by some as one dimensional. The stats are in and he's 5th in NKY in passing with 742 yards and 7th in rushing with 600 yards. He has 9 TD's. No QB touches him in all purpose yards. Could make the argument for the best QB "threat" in NKY.

 

You could put him in the discussion. I believe Nick West would be at the top of that "dual threat" list with Erp right behind him. Bardo has the skill set to be in the discussion but to this point they have not wanted to have him run or needed to have him run.

 

Regardless of where you put him on the list, Erp is ON the short list.

NC plays this one closer than expected by most. CovCath still pulls it out but only 7

Seriously, do you think the level of play would have looked any different if this year's team had played last year's Mooney team in the first game? That Mooney team was absolutely loaded.

 

As for the other loss last year in the first five games (Highlands) it will be interesting to see if this year's team performs at a higher level of play against Highlands than last year's team did. We'll find out in a couple of weeks.

 

Perhaps the optimism is well placed because of the feeling around the program, but wins over a not so good Campbell County team and a Beechwood team that is not yet playing anywhere close to where they played last year, would make the optimism extremely guarded to me.

 

Dixie will be a better indicator I guess, but CovCath beat Dixie last year, so unless they flat out thump them this year I'm not sure what it indicates. Perhaps the best harbinger of how far CovCath has come this year will be the Highlands game. Last year's game was ugly. With the game being at CovCath, I have to assume that if CovCath gets beat by less than 50 points it shows improvement. Does that seem fair?

CCH has beaten the teams they were supposed to beat and have done so convincingly. As Coach Wirth said after the BW game "Don't think you've arrived." He didn't go to school just for the lunch.

 

The two tests will be Dixie and HHS.

 

If HHS were to win by 49, its a setback to CCH.

 

If your overall point is that this team's record is not much different than last year's would have been, I agree. I thought last year's team probably one one more game than I thought they would .

 

I think this year's team wins either 4 or 5 before heading to the playoffs.

 

Again, though, I'm not looking at the record as an indicator of the program's improvement.

The difficulty in trying to compare last years team with this years team is there are several variables that have changed, not just the players on the field. Obviously the current team doesn't have the talent level of a Van Sant, Deters, Buckley, etc. but are 'doing more with less' instead of 'doing less with more'. I do agree that if you take the complete team from last year and switch with this years, records would be about the same.

I can say this with most certainty, this coaching staff would not have stayed in a 3-5 defense against Mooney the entire game and given up 600 yards rushing to a team that throws the ball 5 times a game. They changed to a 4 man front the next game against NCC by the way (four quarters too late).

I don't think it would be much of a game. Now if your talking about Erpenbeck vs. West then yes that would be nice to see.
