They had wins over Louisville and at Arkansas at the time as well. They were either 4-1 or 5-1 with wins over the #1 team and another top 10 team. The ranking was earned.

September 20, 200917 yr Washington is to be congratulated. They played a great football game. The turnaround in the program is evident and remarkable. As a USC fan, I've had my 12 hours of mourning, and I stand ready to be rebuked. Corp played very poorly, but the vaunted offensive line play has yet to materialize this season, and the failure to run the ball effectively, and the three red zone turnovers, were the reason we lost the game. Bravo to the Huskie defenders. DragonFire, your remarks about overrated as a program do not even merit comment. If you believe that USC is no match for lots of other teams out there, go ahead and schedule us. No? Didn't think so. However, we lost yesterday to a team not as good as us, and so the criticism is merited, and I accept it. For now. Incidentally, I think the Pac-10, as it was last season (undefeated in 5 or 6 bowl games), is emerging as very strong this year. While USC is down, Cal appears to be pretty strong, Oregon is still very good, Washington and Stanford are much improved, Oregon State, UCLA, Arizona St. and Arizona are all tough outs.

They were ranked #8 following the 5-0 start, lost to South Carolina and fell to 17th (AP) and 18th (Coaches), then rose to 7th (AP) and 8th (Coaches) following the LSU win.

Why do people say things like that and then immediately turn around and contradict it? If it doesn't merit comment, YOU DON'T COMMENT. The overrated as a program comment stems from this belief that USC is THE best team every single year, when they have removed themselves from the title chase because of losses to very much inferior opponents every year since 2005. I'm not saying USC is not a top 10 program (or, as you laughably projected onto me, "no match for lots of other teams out there"), I'm just saying they're not the best, and certainly not far and away the best as some try to say every single year. Of USC's five conference losses from 2006 onward, four were to unranked teams.
