Congratulations to Belfry!

Whitley Co. has to get it in gear. The wheels came off the wagon tonight. I didn't see this coming at all!!!

Belfry is always tough year after year. used to play against them back in the 80's always were big, fast and hard hitting every play.

Belfry coaching staff must have made some good adjustments at the half and Whitley had no answer.

 

I made my first visit ever to Whitley County's Colonel Stadium tonight to watch this game and it was entertaining. Whitley looked good on offense in the first half, matching Belfry play-for-play. I believe Belfry led 21-20 at the break.

 

But Belfry absolutely shut Whitley down in the second half. The coaching staff made tremendous adjustments at the half and Whitley was completely shut off. Coach Haywood had a smile from ear to ear as he was leaving the field, with his arm around an assistant. It looked like they were really happy, not only with the win, but with the way they played the second half.

 

Varney was fantastic. Whitley really had no answer and couldn't stop him. I'm not sure he'd need his jersey washed if it hadn't been for the big second quarter rain. His ability to cut in the open field was impressive, but to me it was his first step that made him so great. He hit the whole before the Whitley defenders knew he had the ball.

 

Our bleacher math had predicted around 300 yards rushing and then tacked on the kick return to push him to 400 total yards. I was thinking he had 6 TDs, but it was all a blur. Just a great performance.

 

One other thing - Belfry's line was fantastic tonight and in one man's opinion it all started with #72 at center. I don't know his name, but whatever it is, he was the man. Congratulations Belfry. I've always loved watching you at the state and I loved it tonight.:thumb:

Whitley had no answer for Varney, what a show this kid put on.

 

It's not just Whitley....I don't think anyone has an answer for Varney.

With district play getting ready to start WC needs to regroup find themselves as a whole football team.

Wburg gets drilled, Whitley gets drilled, LC, North, and South are all having low seasons.....Hounds maybe the only local team that can salvage the football season in the Tri County this year. Not sure the Hounds are as good as many think. Les, who are all the guys who pick the games in the Friday paper? None of them appear to be from Corbin are they all Laurel County folks? I know Cardwell, and Winterhouse but where are the others from?

 

Yes the Hounds are as good as many think.4-0 on the season winners of 23 straight regular season games.And the Hounds are still playing with alot of young players that are getting better every game.

Wow! I thought Whitley would bounce back from the loss to Bell last week. Whitley needs to regroup and get back on the winning track so that they can make another run in the playoffs. Good win for Belfry and staff. Good luck to both teams.

It is a rebuilding year.

 

This team has potential but the reality is they are still not really good, but they are improving. There are some holes still left to fill and they are playing quite a few freshmen and sophomores trying to fill them holes. They're still searching.

 

It has been a lot of fun watching them progress and even though they have taken a couple of losses, I've really enjoyed seeing them have to claw and scratch to try and win. This team in particular really needed this type of schedule, even if they may not be as competitive against the better teams as the last few Pirate squads might have been.

WCHS is the best one win team around. The schedule has been brutal.

The Colonels have the talent to win their district and make some playoff noise, but the schedule has been against them.

It's only a rebuilding year from the perspective of what 2003-05, and to a lesser extent 2006-08, has seen there. On a longer view, the six year run the Pirates have had has been exceptional, not the rule.

 

But FWIW, at this point in the season, I think this Belfry team is looking better than the 2006 squad.

Its a rebuilding year because of the number of starters they lost and lack of experienced players to step into those positions. Has nothing to do with the past 6 years.
