Now that all 3 levels of Highlands & Ryle have played...

I think I got the idea for BGP from you too... Wait a minute, I met you through BGP. :D

All kidding aside, I think it is great for Ryle and I love the fact that Coach Warner and Ryle have stepped to the plate against HHS. Hopefully it will become a long standing tradition that will surely benefit both programs.

True, but I had been sending you via mental telepathy, the idea to start BGP. :D

I think it's true that freshman football is more about the physical strengths of the players involved. My brother coached a FTJFL team many years ago, which had one really big, 8th grade kid at running back. They pretty well dominated most of their competition. Their only loss was a narrow one, to, a much larger, Campbell Co. Red Devils team. But that same kid stopped growing soon after that, and within a few years, was smaller than many of his classmates.

That's what makes freshman football interesting. The kids are hitting their growth spurts all at different times, and you never know what they'll be like a few seasons into the future.

I would think that the second contest this year and all games between Ryle and Highlands from next year on will be a good barometer of the development of Ryle football under Coach Warner. Next year's seniors beat Highlands as freshman. It takes quite a while to build a program to compete with Highlands but I do believe that Ryle is on the right track with its program and facilities. Ryle has nicer facilities then Highlands, which is surprising considering the tradition of the Birds. That just goes to show that facilities does not really mean nearly as much as hard work and coaching.

If there was room at HHS for nicer facilities trust me I believe they would have them.:thumb:

I do understand what you are saying about space, but I would think that some modernization of the bleachers and lighting and a new turf installation would be done with all of the tradition, money and support for a great football program in Ft. Thomas. Maybe they want the lighting to be bad so the visitors can't see what hit them. :D

I think they recently upgraded the lighting...by replacing all the burned out bulbs. Seriously though, I believe that is in the works. And of course, we already have the turf.

When AC was a freshman what was their freshman team like? The reason I ask, when Ryle's senior class were freshman, they went 2-7. Ryle plays very many juniors and one very talented soph in their varsity games. There is experience to gain and will be noticed throughout the season. Naturally, this depletes the junior depth on JV. In a great program, juniors dominate the JV field. Very seldomly does Ryle have the ability to field a Saturday morning team of junior starters. However with the strong junior class at Ryle, their depth and experience will continue to grow and success and recognition will happen very soon in Union.

Last four Ryle freshman teams: 2-7, 7-1, 6-3, 3-0?? We may see fdifferent results far sooner than 2012.

And of course, we already have the turf.

And yet, turf nonetheless.
Here's my take on what happened against X in 05: We got blasted in 2005 by X for multiple reasons. Playing Colerain the week before on a Saturday (which means one less recovery/preparation day) didn't help. We came out of the Colerain game very beat up. Having to play two big and physical teams like Colerain and X back to back is pretty tough on a relatively small school. Frankly it happened again in 06 when we played Elder and X back to back, although because of the experienced gained in 05 by the returning starters kept the game much, much closer. Our starting qb in 05 didn't play much against Colerain because of a shoulder injury. The back up qb got knocked out of the Colerain game with a concussion. I'm not sure if he even practiced or played the X week. I think the starting qb played the entire game against X, but his shoulder was still banged up. Also, we started a lot of sophomores (albeit talented sophomores) in 05 . They were talented (that was the group that were seniors in 07), but it's still tough for them to compete against likewise very talented seniors on X's team who had two years of lifting, practicing and conditioning on our sophomores. Furthermore many of the junior and senior starters on the 2005 team didn't start the year before because the 2004 team was a heavily senior dominated team. Cecil had started at qb in 2004 and Kramer had also started some games, but none of the O line started in 2004. I don't think many, if any, of the starters on 05defense had started in 04. We were a very inexperienced and very young team in 05. X was pretty dang good too don't forget (much like they are every year). I don't think the blow out in 05 had anything to do with technical things. X was just that much better than we were in 05. Just my thoughts.

I agree with your assessment of the '05 HHS squad. Very tough schedule, inexperience line and shy of leadership by the small in number of seniors on the team. With that said, they had a very decent season losing in the playoffs to a Lex Cath team that won state that year.

For the most part, I am of the opinion, that at the freshman level the team with the better pure athletes is the team that will have the most present success. Just as Leatherneck said, 1 to 2 years later that same team can be very, very different. Many, many factors go into what develops into a quality varsity product.

JV is a completely different animal. Most notably due to rosters changing throughout the season, sometimes even week to week. JV could possibly be the most difficult of the three levels to coach and play for just this reason.

The two most important aspects that go into building a quality program (Ryle) and continuing to drive a quality program (Highlands) is development and consistency. From freshman to varsity, if the kids develop more and more each year and have a consistent path in which to follow then I have no doubt you will see both Highlands and Ryle playing late into the playoffs for years to come.

Their Frosh Team went undefeated.
