The question really is why is it that parents do not teach their children to respect the president. I do not agree with Obama on any level. I think he is wrong and is incapable of running our country. But he is my president and I will listen to my leader whenever he speaks. He is my leader and I hope that he does well. Our kids need to realize that it is important to listen and understand people and issues even if you disgree with them. Part of having an intelligant population is the ability to reason and evaluate opposing viewpoints.

I agree with you on this part. No matter what you believe, what does it hurt to hear out the other party. Most people today are more inclined to turn the person off, speak negatively against them, or just make up their mind before they hear anything. How can we progress as a society if we refuse to listen to multiple sides and develop our opinions accordingly?

I'll disagree. There are many "smart" kids that have no influences in their life that have even graduated high school (much less gotten a college degree) besides their teachers. The superstars that they look up to may make their money in sports or entertainment. These kids need to hear stories - from multiple sources - about how one's circumstances do not determine where one ends up in life. They need to know that being poor is not an excuse for doing poor work or behaving poorly. They need many positive, educated examples in their life.

This may be true. However, it was not parents demanding that their kids not watch the president. This is ordinary America not willing to let their kids see a speech on the importance of education.

 

And that was going on with Bush too.

 

It is politics plan and simple and both sides do it. Anyone on either side wants to take shots at the other side for this and their closet is dirty with similar actions.

 

This has nothing to do with education, Presidency, race, etc, etc, it is simply dumb political actions that both sides partake in.

That's a great quote.... and I haven't trusted our government in quite some time because we are not well-informed. The pork in the bills, the fine print that isn't shared in the speeches.... it all leads to dis-trust. And dis-trust bothers me worse than disagreements on the issues.

I am going with the answer, you had administrators with backbones in those days.

 

Do a search of the articles and most of them have comments about people being upset that the Republican President was indoctrinating the youth to the Republican way.

 

Both sides are ignorant for how they handle these things.

If it were the former George Bushes or someone named Brantley Whitaker III, this wouldnt be an issue. I have voted Democratic in the Presidential election once in 26 years and all of this nonsense makes me ill. People wonder why our country is in the state it is in today with the internal division. This issue is Exhibit A

I think we're at a point in our country now where it doesn't matter who the president was/is, the opposing faction would make a fuss over it regardless. I absolutely believe that had GW Bush attempted something like this, there would have been an outcry from the left.

 

This should have been something everyone was on board with and, dare I say, pleased with. But, playing politics has bled into and overlowed every aspect of life. At worst, it should have been a non-issue.

So, you do or do not have proof that parents objected to speeches from GHWB and Reagan to schoolchildren? If so, I'd like to see them. The first sentence is irrelevant to the discussion.

Ironic, isn't it? That parents kept their children home from school so they wouldn't have to listen to the President telling them to stay in school.

 

I remember my dad (as a high-school guidance counselor) setting up in-school diversion programs because he thought it was a bit silly to suspend (send home) kids who apparently wanted to spend as little time as possible at school.
