Belfry is not the Pirates of old that is for sure, but we need to remember that Belfry always starts out slow. Belfry will be right in the thick of things come playoffs. Boyd is moving in the right direction IMO, but Belfry will be a little more than the Lions can handle. Boyd plays hard, but Belfry wins it.

Boyd County actually has a winning record against Belfry, I found that to be a bit of a surprise, but Boyd County has always played their best football against them. I think Belfry takes this one however, this is not the same Lions team that found ways to win in the past. Last year we were unable to do anything without Zac. We don't have anyone to replace what we've lost in other positions as far as that goes. We have a very good quarterback and a couple guys who run hard, but the receivers are dropping the ball layed right in their hands. The defense seems to be tackling better, but we won't know how much better untill they've played a few games.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Boyd come out with the win at Pikeville's field. However, if you recall David Jones was completely in field running for a TD three times and pull up with a Hamstring. Belfry lost due to being out of shape. They never lost another game the rest of the season. Belfry is known to look rough in their first game of the season.

 

Boyd County actually beat two state championship teams, two years in a row and were their only loss of the season. (Belfry 2003, Russell 2004) Of course Boyd didnt finish with a winning season either year....

 

I know that game was somewhat of an anomaly… but Boyd has pulled things like that off in the past. Interesting stat you pointed out about the Lions upsetting two state champions (Belfry & Russell) only to later slide into the oblivion of mediocrity. If you recall, also in 2003, Boyd traveled to Log Mountain and spanked a heavily favored Bell Co team 31 – 20 in a first round playoff game.

 

As other posters have already stated, Belfry is oft times a slow starting team but end up bulldozing opponents by mid season. If one has to play them, getting them early may help...a little.

Boyd County's depth will hurt them all season. It was no excuse against Raceland, because they had about the same amount of players, but I am sure that Belfry has quite a few more.

Maybe it was Belfry in 2003 and Russell in 2005? Belfry won it all in 03 and 04. Either way it was a cool stat.

True above about Belfry starting slow, they always do and then they pick up steam as the season progresses. Their tougher than normal first half of the season could be pretty interesting this season if they don't start the learning curve a little earlier than normal.

I will agree the passing was fairly good(what little they passed), but also did see at least one receiver stretch and make a pretty good grab or two. Not sure why you keep dogging all the WR's. You might need to take your complaints to your Off Coordinator:thumb:

The passing was very good. I don't mean to harp on the wr's. Just wished they (BC) would have won. Don't get offended.
