August 21, 200917 yr I cringe every time I see the non-term "irregardless" used. I saw a poster who I have a great deal of respect for use it in another forum earlier tonight, and it was all I could do to keep from calling that person out. By the same token, it is very difficult for me to keep from correcting people in their various butcherings of the English language on this board on a minutely basis. Folks: Next time you have the urge to use the non-word "irregardless," I beg of you, please use "irrespective" instead. It is a challenge for me many times as well. My girlfriend, who often reads over my shoulder, is constantly pointing out grammatical errors. My biggest beef is when people are talking about a "dominant" team or that something is "dominant" over something else and don't use the proper form. They say "Man they are definitely the dominate team." They what? That is a long "A" sound at the end, not a short "A." :madman:
August 21, 200917 yr I have a lot of pet peeves. But one that has developed recently is the spelling of the word ridiculous. How many times have you seen it spelled "r-e-d-i-c-u-l-o-u-s"? I realize that people are spelling it the way they most likely say it, but even that is wrong.

August 21, 200917 yr I know I've used the word before. I will have to make a mental note to never use it again. You know what I mean? Actually, I could care less. OK? I mean, this is just, um, rediculous.

That makes me think of Jim's thread from a while ago bemoaning the fact that people no longer can spell ludicrous correctly--it is now ludacris.
August 21, 200917 yr BGP needs to add spell check to help those of us that type with 2 fingers and didn't do so well in our English courses :laugh:

August 21, 200917 yr BGP needs to add spell check to help those of us that type with 2 fingers and didn't do so well in our English courses :laugh: Using FireFox helps too, it has a built in spell check that underlines misspelled words as you type them.
August 21, 200917 yr So, you're basicaly monosyllabic? :thumb::lol: Nah, ... just no more than 3 syllables per word for me!

August 21, 200917 yr Right up there with "nuclear" and "realtor" for use of the lexicon that most peeves me. My favorite protagonist, Nero Wolfe, once tore up a dictionary that said it was okay to use the words "infer" and "imply" interchangably.
