What horrible contracts has Walt made?

 

Taveras wasn't a horrible signing. It didn't work out nearly as well as anyone had hoped, but it's not like $4 million is going to limit the team's payroll. Maybe we could've gotten him for $2 or $3 mill, but who knows?

 

Corey Patterson is the one that comes to my mind immediately, but I think that was more Dusty than Walt...

 

Jerry Hairston's worked out perfectly.

 

I think Walt's time in Cincinnati will be more defined by his ability to keep the core of players that are here now. Particularly Joey Vottp, Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips & Homer Bailey.

For only $1 million more the Reds could have had Bobby Abreu for this year. And as for Patterson, the last time I looked it up the GM is the Manager's boss. He okayed the signing.

With the way Bronson is pitching you have to think some contenders might be willing to make a deal for him.

Roenicke doesn't bother me all that much they have a good bullpen already. Rolen will fill in until Fransisco is ready hopefully in 2011.

And as a bonus you've got him for next year. Abreu, who has a .300 lifetime average with a .400 OBP and also averages 100 runs scored, 20 homers and 29 steals was signed for a 1 year $5 million contract but Walt saw fit to spend $8 million on Willy. Nice job. And I've seen Roenicke more than just tonight, I usually watch the Red Sox on my laptop while watching the Reds on the television. Roenicke was the best player that changed hands in that trade. The Reds had no need for Rolen unless they were going to get him for some insignifigant minor leaguers and were willing to pick up his salary. However, Walt wanted to make sure that the Blue Jays got a potential closer in the deal and still picked up Rolen's salary next year. Say what you want about Rolen being such an improvement but he isn't. He can't stay healthy and even when he does he's lost most of his power. What good is a veteran presence when your team is losing 90+ games? Is he going to teach them to lose the right way? Seems they've already got that down.

 

Walt has managed to put a lineup out there that has a sub .300 OBP at SS, LF and CF. His third basemen have amassed a .303 OBP. Meanwhile, his smallball approach has yielded a team that ranks 16 out of 16 teams in runs scored, hits, Avg, OBP and Slg. He, and the Reds have been garbage so far.

And 2 of your most effective relievers (Cordero and Rhodes) are at least 34 years old. Rhodes is 39. You do not trade guys that can throw 95 MPH with effect period. You for sure don't trade them for declining, injury-prone third basemen.

What does Rolen do that makes him worth $11 million? Sure, he plays nice defense. Sure, he's a nice veteran to have in the clubhouse. He's also 34 with a history of being injury prone and has lost most of his power. And for the privilege of having him and playing his full salary next year, they gave up Encarnacion and two guys that could figure prominently in Toronto's bullpen plans for the next few years.

 

I respect Jocketty's work in St. Louis as much as anyone, but the Taveras and Rolen deals leave me scratching my head. As does not pursuing a big hitter in LF over the winter when some guys were available.

 

One other thing ... I was chastised here last April and May when I suggested that the Reds should have explored Harang's worth on the open market, given his recent workload. I still think it was the absolutely prudent thing to do, especially that Harang's value is now a fraction of what it once was.

Taveras was released by the Rockies. At the time, no other teams were known to be actively pursuing him. So why give him any contract of consequence?

Really? Hairston had a fluke half-season and the Reds rewarded him for it, giving him $2 million when he had made barely half that over the two previous years combined.

 

His best position is second base, which happens to be one of the Reds' strengths, and as an outfielder, he doesn't hit enough to be of any real value.

 

Then they donated him to the Yankees for a 20-year-old Low-A catcher that can't hit.

 

With Taveras, that's $6 million spent on fast guys that fill Dusty's fetish for speed at the top of the order, even if they can't hit.

Maybe so, but his moves over the last year don't exactly inspire a ton of confidence.

 

Jocketty's done some good things. He got Masset for Griffey and Owings and some change that may still work out for Dunn. But he had a bad winter, plain and simple.

The only thing you get out of trading Harang is dumping his salary. The Reds SUCK!! again as usual. Jockety has done nothing, Dusty's a terrible manager, and the beat goes on in Cincinnati. :puke:

What is he trying to follow Rachel Phelps' master plan where they finish dead last, lose attendance and move the team to, say Las Vegas. If that's the plan he's well on his way. He's basically already traded for Roger Dorn. :lol::lol:

I'd question Hairston working out perfectly. Lincoln's contract is terrible. There are some others. Who's decisions was it to leave Gomes in AAA and bring McDonald north to start the year?
