goldendomer57 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 After watching a boxing match yesterday I realized that boxers take alot more punches than mma fighters before going down. Is the reason for this the light MMA gloves or is it that boxers hsve better chins?
Original Rookie Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I think a lot of it has to do with UFC fighters being allowed to fight on the ground.
sportsfan41 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Gloves are a big time difference. If you've never been hit by either then it may not seem like that big of a deal but it sure is.
halfback20 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 UFC gloves do not have much padding at all. The padding that is there is there simply to protect the hands, not the opponents face. This makes it much easier to score a KO with a punch. Not to mention in Mixed Martial Arts (the UFC is a promotion in which promotes MMA) you can knee, kick, and punch to knock someone out. This does not mean boxers have better chins than MMA guys.
5wide Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 The gloves are a HUGE difference They are very different sports, but absolutely the gloves are a huge part of it. Big difference in getting hit with a cushion and not. But aside from there, the striking is much different. For starters, in boxing everything is above the waist. The majority of your offense is geared toward attacking the head and defensively you don't have to worry about anything other than deciding whether to defend the body or the head from a punch. In MMA, pretty much everything is fair game. Takedowns, ground and pound, kicks, leg strikes, body shots, head shots, etc. So, on top of the the difference in gloves... 1. I see a lot of jabs when I watch boxing. Jabs don't knock people out. I can't back this up, but percentage-wise, it seems like power shots make up a larger portion of MMA punches than in boxing. 2. I think it's easier to sneak a clean shot through in MMA because of all the things you have to be concerned with defending. 3. Could the difference in format factor in? Three or five five minute rounds in MMA vs. 10-12 three minute rounds in boxing. I'm not sure...certainly having to push that extra two minutes would be a big difference, but is it offset by the longer length of boxing matches. I don't know. I think those are some factors, but the difference in gloves is the bulk of it, IMO. I could be wrong, but that's my two cents on the subject.

Boxing gloves can still back a big punch with a clean shot, but nothing is like taking a kick to the head.
NHS BIG DADDY Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Boxing gloves can still back a big punch with a clean shot, but nothing is like taking a kick to the head. Id much rather take a punch from a boxer than a left kick to the head from Cro Cop.
dolamite Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 4 oz. gloves - 16 oz. gloves. Makes a huge difference
5wide Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Id much rather take a punch from a boxer than a left kick to the head from Cro Cop. Which had you rather take? 1. A right hand from Chuck Liddell. 2. A left high kick from Mirko Cro Cop. 3. An elbow from Kenny Florian. 4. A takedown from GSP. 5. A combo from Anderson Silva. 6. A slam from Rampage. 7. A right hand from Brock Lesnar. 8. An armbar from Fedor. 9. A right hand from Dan Henderson. Any others you can think of? I'd take a hard punch from a boxer with his boxing gloves on over almost any of those options...
BoondockSaint Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Not to mention because the gloves are so much larger in boxing, it's harder to get a clean shot through to the face. When the guy on the defensive goes to block a throw, he might still get hit but when the gloves touch each other first it takes some of the power out of the punch.

That would be worse. And an uppercut from Rampage. An over hand right from Hendo/Liddell. GnP from GSP. None of those would be fun .
BoondockSaint Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Or about how a back elbow from Anderson, some of you have seen this I'm sure but start watching at about 2:50: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0qRQFJg9tA

Warrior32 Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 A slam from Rampage would be the very last thing I would pick..
