Weathers will be a FA at the end of this sesason...more than likely will retire IMO. This trade shows that other teams value him more than certain people...aka you....want to admit.

The Reds will most likely get a decent prospect in this trade for a guy who might never pitch again after this year. If you'd look at any of the sites posted, with actual stat's, you would see Weathers isn't on the books for next year. Which would make him a 41 yr old free agent likely to retire.

 

I think it's a pretty good move. The Reds have pretty much sank out of the playoff hunt and are likely to get another player who has a chance at being around for a while..

There was an interview with him yesterday after the trade...just seemed like he was ready to hang them up to me

Weathers isn't a horrible pitcher, and I'm sure if in a different setting he could continue to be effective.

In most cases, the team that trades the established veteran usually has a list of prospects to choose from and a certain period of time (a month or two) to make its decision.

From what I read, that is the case. The Reds have a list of players to chodse from. They can scout the players for a certain period, and if they don't want to choose any of the players on the list, then they have some sort of cash option.

If he was valued by so many teams how did he completely clear waivers without another team claiming him? There are plenty of teams in baseball that could use what you consider a valuable setup man but yet he cleared waivers and was able to be traded.

How do you know that Milwaukee was the only team that claimed him? All we know, by the way that the waiver wire works, is that the Brewers were the lowest team in the standings to claim him. It's conceivable that there were some other teams (Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Yankees, Angels) that were interested in him, too.

 

Weathers is holding opposing hitters to a .199 batting average ... a lot of teams would like to have that in the pen, and the gopher-ball problem might not be as bad in a more forgiving park.
