You guys must all be living perfect lives or didn't hang out much or at all as a kid. I can remember being questioned plenty of times by the police for just hanging out with friends, just driving without breaking any laws and so on.

Were none of you guys ever questioned by the police while parked with a girl in your car or anything?

Nope . The only run-in that I had with the police as a youth was when I discovered a guy who had committed suicide in his car by gunshot near Belmont Lake . I was around 11 or 12 .

Doesn't sound much like it...

Maybe the fact that I grew up 8 or 10 miles outside of Baltimore had something to do with it. Officers of the law were generally plenty busy in town, and didn't go in much for hassling suburbanites partaking of illicit substances and engaging in carnal experimentation.

I've been pulled over at 3:30 in the morning. Wasn't speeding or anything, and the officer started asking me all kinds of dumb questions like "why was on the road?", "where was I going?", "where was I coming from?", etc. I was pulled over for the sole fact that I was young and it was late at night.

That happened to me several times in my youth. In one instance I was going home from work one Saturday night and the Fort Thomas police pulled me over. They asked me what I was doing and when I told them that I had been at work in Newport and that now I was going home to Highland Heights they asked me what I was doing in Fort Thomas. :ohbrother: (For those not familiar with NKY geography, the fastest way from Newport to Highland Heights is through Fort Thomas. It would have been downright inconvenient to go any other way.) I simply looked at the cop and to emphasize the ridiculousness of his enquiry, I repeated my intentions very slowly.... I was working in Newport. I am going home. He let me go without ever telling me why he pulled me over. I am convinced I was pulled over because I was young and it was 1:00 AM on a Saturday night.

 

In another instance I was driving with three of my friends in the car when I was pulled over. The cop asked for my license but didn't ask for ID's from anybody else in the car. When he noticed that I didn't live in the town he told all of us that he knew that we were there just to cause trouble and that we all needed to "get out of town". Again, the cop never actually told us what we had done for him to pull us over but I am convinced it was because it was late at night on a weekend and we were young. We all got a good laugh at the "get out of town" comment, particularly the two friends in the car who actually lived in the town.

My niece and I got pulled over one night about 2:00 AM after working at a Reds' game. They questioned her and asked what we were doing. Said she swerved in her lane. We were having a good conversation at the time.

 

I guess the selling point that we were being truthful was the SportService attire we were wearing and the nacho cheese stands on the shirts from working that booth.

I have to add my name to the list of folks who have had to under go the "humiliation of self-justification" of police when I was much younger. Of course looking back, it wasn't humiliating. Furthermore, looking back I really don't have a problem with the police pulling me over. Cops are on the alert (well at least that's what we taxpayers expect them to be) for things out of the ordinary. Many a time the people pulled over were not doing any thing wrong; we show them our ID, explain what we are doing, and the police let us on our way. But many a time the police using the same techniques, have discovered people doing wrong. Personally, even though I have a pretty strong libertarian and personal rights streak in me, I'll take this extremely minor personal "humiliation" on the public streets in order keep society safer.

 

When my sons have complained about the police doing the same to them that they did to me growing up, I'd explain that point to them. Plus just knowing that the police may pull them over even if they "are doing nothing wrong", acts as a strong deterrent.

I will have to admit that my run ins with the Ft Thomas police were pretty much self inflicted. Nothing like a 79 CJ7 Jeep with Cherry Bombs on the exhaust to wake them up while they were sleeping on the job at 1 or 2 in the morning. Where have you been, Ummm at my girlfriends house across town. Does her parents know that you were there. They did when I started my Jeep up.....:laugh:

A friend of mine and her sister had been vistiting Nashville for a weekend a couple of years ago and were heading back home on a Sunday when a State Trooper pulled them over on the Cumberland Parkway for speeding. He asked them where they had been and where they were going. They told him Nashville and were on their way back home in eastern Kentucky. He asked them why they were in Nashville. They told him to see the sites and hear some music.

 

What followed was a sobriety test for both, (which both passed because they were not doing anything) and a complete search of their car and their luggage. She said he even looked under the car, under the hood, in the trunk, and went through all their garments in the luggage and searched their purses. He found nothing, told them they were OK and to slow down, and have a good day. She said all this took about 45 minutes.

She was really steamed to say the least. She felt it was because she had county license plates from eastern Kentucky that caused him to react the way he did.
