Who had the best and worst NBA draft in 2009?

Featured Replies

2 of the best would have to be: Spurs & T'Wolves.

Spurs – DeJuan Blair / Pitt & Jack McClinton / Miami

T’Wolves – Rubio, Flynn, Ellington & Calathes

What do you think?

Worst - Knicks have to be up there. I mean big bust for them that they didn't get Curry, that would have been huge for them. Hill may be alright, but they have Al Harrington. They could move Harrington to the three though? Also, sending Q for Darko? I Q isn't that great, but for Darko?

Kings actually had an alright draft IMO for a change.

The Grizz actually came away okay I think. I mean they got Thabeet in which will provide some size and some D. Its hard to teach 7'3'' and kinda athletic. Sam Young will probably make the roster, and he should work out good giving Rudy Gay a blow. I think they done what they could in this draft to get better moving forward. Im not sold at all on Rubio yet and apparently the Grizzlies aren't either. It looks like Conleys going to be their guy unless they can pick up something in FA. I think the T Wolves drafted Flynn to be the guy until Rubio is ready, but thats just my take.

Of course the two you mentioned were pretty solid picks.

You have to give the Spurs an A+. They got a steal with Blair and a nice pickup of McClinton!

I'm not so sure about the T-wolves. They got 2 great players in Rubio and Flynn, but in the words of Dick Vitale, that is a combination that will get a coach fired. Both have the potential to be great PG's, but I don't know how they will fit together.

I can try to let you in on their thinking from a fan perspective...

Hill will replace David Lee who will probably get a big deal via free agency. Moving Richardson not only frees up cash, but more minutes at the 3 for Al Harrington who is the much better player.

D'Antoni is intrigued by Darko, but I agree that he may not help the team much. Here's to hoping he flourishes for us.

I don't know if they had the best draft, but the Spurs seemed to get incredible value for their picks in round 2.

I also like what the Nets are doing, overall. Free up cash and get good, young talent. I love drafting T-Will. I love getting Lee to play with Harris. They are set for making their run at the free agent market of 2010.

I personally don't feel like both will still be there when the season starts...I think there will be a trade made somewhere throughout the summer.

So...

How does Calathes get drafted if he is already heading to Greece? Isn't that a waste of a draft pick?

They will own his rights.

My theory is that since Rubio is so young they know he more than likely won't be ready to go on the NBA level night in night out. Flynn on the otherhand I think is capable of starting at point for them from the start. Flynn can shoot the ball better and is more athletic. He can also get to the rack more. I think they work them both at the PG spot, but for the first year or so I think you will see more Flynn then pretty Ricky.

Scenario number two. T Wolves may be afraid the arbitration committee might not be able to get Rubio out of his 6 mil buyout. That will be more than he will make in his full three years of his rookie scale contract. Could be possible if they don't want to spend that much money this year if it comes down to it, and if they can get off the hook next year they send him back and keep his rights. Then they still have Flynn.

In either scenario, Flynn, this year anyway I think is the one you will see more. I cannot see how they would benefit playing them both at the same time being Rubio wouldn't make a good two, and although Flynn can score he is way undersized. Thought it was interesting that Flynn hasn't grew since 8th grade because of breaking his ankle and growth plate. Kids got hops though thats for sure. When the class of classes came through a couple years ago, Flynn was the sickest dunker in the McKie D game warm-ups. I was just as impressed watching him that night in person as I was anyone else. Rose, Mayo, Beasley, Gordon, Griffin, you name it.

The best draft for me was the Grizzlies, Thabeet is not an offensively gifted player, but he will be able to block shots and alter them as well. His defensive presence will be felt immediately. Carroll is a long, athletic guy that plays excellent Defense and has a great motor, he'll be an effective addition off the bench and I think that Sam Young will get quite a bit of PT, he is very long, athletic and tough, I was surprised he fell as far as he did, I like Vitale's comparison to Trevor Ariza. If they can get their point guard situation straightened out-whether that be Michael Conley Jr. or maybe they get the #1 pick next year and get someone like Wall-they will be a very talented young team and will compete to be in the playoffs for years to come.

The worst draft was Minnesota's IMO, they drafted 5 point guards, why do that? You're not going to be able to play them all and keep them happy. They could have capitalized on their four picks in the first round and put together a very nice core, I think Flynn will be the best player from this draft, but if he and Rubio play at the same time, he isn't good enough to play off the ball and neither is Rubio. If I were the T-Wolves I would have gotten Rubio and Curry-to replace their backcourt which they traded away to Washington-a power forward like DaJuan Blair and a 3 like Sam Young. That makes for a a very young starting lineup of Rubio, Curry, Young, Jefferson, Love and Blair off the bench. That team wouldn't be very good immediately, but in 3 to 4 years, they would have been very talented team that could compete for the playoffs year in and year out for years to come.

Who had the best draft? The L.A Lakers. They traded their picks for cash and future draft picks, which allows them to sign two key pieces from their championship team...Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom. I'll take getting cash to sign those two over any player in the draft.

So...

Yea, I'm sure he will be getting paid more money as well

They are only allowed to pay 1.5 Million of it, he has to pay the rest.

Rubio may not even come over or he may force a trade as he is really picky about where he's going to play.

Twolves drafted 3 pure point guards, horrible waste of 2 top ten picks.

They already traded the guy from UNC and I don't think Rubio will be in the league next year.
