June 19, 200917 yr Let's hear the pro's and con's to racino's, starting with... Though I am rarely on opposite sides of an issue with LN, TTC, and my uncle (who is the legislator for this area), I am opposed to racinos and it has nothing to do with morality, et. al. It is because the way the plan is proposed by Beshear is a "bailout" in sheep's clothing. I would be glad to go into more detail, but someone should start another thread.
June 19, 200917 yr See, you are too darned quick. I've got to go coach a little league game so its gonna have to be delayed. I'll post later, after the 7 year-old pitching machine Padres have whipped up on the Yankees and their dastardly coach.
June 19, 200917 yr To me, these things are a must if we (KY) want to keep up with other states and the purses they are starting to offer at their tracks. How can you argue with the following facts?: http://www.horseswork.com/support_bill_2.htm
June 20, 200917 yr I support gaming at race tracks, back yards, or at the local grocery store. I don't care where they add slots. I don’t understand why we continue to allow so many KY dollars to cross or boarders to other states. During today’s hard economical times it makes no sense to me. I disagree with folks about gaming. Do I think gaming is the answer to our budget issues? No, we need to spot spending. The only way to fix the budget is to stop wasting money. As we see with this current bill Shady Grady Stumbo has add Pork to this bill to try and lure support. Nevertheless I still think we should try and take advantage of those dollars being sent across the boarders. Now for the folks that will throw out issues with gaming. The number one argument about gaming is “Morality” They believe that gambling causes the following: 1. Addiction – I have no argument. Just like any habit you can become addicted to gambling. 2. Prostitution – I work for the Courts system. This is already a problem in urban areas of the state. 3. Violent Crimes- Such has robbery and burglaries. Currently happening in our state at a high level. Main reasons are economy and lack of jobs and Drug addiction. 4. Ruins Families – Drug addiction is currently killing families. Also the stress of the economy is causing stress on families. No jobs, can’t pay the bills. I don’t have percentages on crime rates in other states with gaming. But talking with law enforcement from other states when gaming was introduced to their states they did not see a rise in crime. But the have told me over the last two years crime has risen because the country’s economy has went down the drain. Gaming will not fix our Budget woes. Only smart spending will. But gaming sure will help our budget issues.

June 27, 200917 yr I am a right wing Conservative scardy cat but I think casinos can help the state. As a christian I would probably vote against them but as a citizen the potential revenue could really bring us to a surplus. The biggest issue that I hear from my conservative brothers is the location of the casinos. It was rumored that they would be located in Harlan County or other appalachain regions. Is it smart to bring gambling to the poorest areas?

June 27, 200917 yr Id love to have something similar to the new Hollywood casino down in Lawrenceburg. That thing is pretty awesome. Indiana Downs has a nice new racino up towards Indianapolis thats just a few months old. I can see why people from other states think we are stupid with our dry counties and no gaming. Were missing the boat big time.

June 28, 200917 yr [/b] Kind of a double edged sword. You could also ask, is it smart to bring many jobs to the poorest part of the state? Are you saying the only way and best way to bring jobs to the poorest areas of the state is through gambling?
June 28, 200917 yr Are you saying the only way and best way to bring jobs to the poorest areas of the state is through gambling? I don't think he is, but what else are you going to bring to that area of KY to make $$$$ and provide people with jobs?
June 28, 200917 yr The thing I don't understand at all is that every single person in the state of Kentucky that is of leagal age and wants to legally gamble can do so. They could play the state lottery, bet at horse tracks, make their way to many casinos in the surrounding states or any other parts of the world, or play cards and bet on sports online. Our state's horse industry is about to be destroyed and many jobs will be lost, yet we as a state aren't willing to solve the problem. It's one of the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
June 28, 200917 yr Are you saying the only way and best way to bring jobs to the poorest areas of the state is through gambling? Nope. Just posing the other side of the coin. Something some can't quite force themselves to do. I don't gamble but at the same time I do not have a problem with the industry. If it provides much needed jobs to a depressed area, I don't have a problem with it. Since you brought it up, you must have some ideas as to what might be the best way to bring jobs to these regions.

The difference is that there is a correlation in SES and healthy living. Part of the culture in appalachia is a comfort with area and a feeling on oneness with the culture. I would fear that casinos would be too great a temptation for the region and could cause more harm than good.
