June 19, 200917 yr Has anyone on this board ever killed a fly with their bare hand? I do know people who have, actually caught them in their hand. I had to laugh out of the President doing this. He has lived in quite a few places that maybe didn't have screens in the window.

No But its save to say that most wacko groups such as PETA don't get it. If they want to be so zealous about life, why don't they defend the life of the unborn child. That would seem to be more important to me. They make a big issue of a stinking, filthy fly being smacked and rant and rave over a chicken, but are silent on babies brains being sucked out of their heads. Do you want to see their thinking about such an issue, look at commando's link. That says it all. So I really don't understand your confusion.

I think PETA is a joke compared to what it could be, but to paint all members/supporters with a brush that just assumes they support abortion is silly. People speak in such definites.. It's just as easy to say "Some people who...." or "In my experience...."

An individual who is a member of PETA can be a member of several groups. As a group, PETA's mission is to promote ethical treatment of animals. Their mission statement is simply that. By your logic, members of a pro life group would all be meat eaters, for instance. Individuals make up the membership of these organizations. I'm certain you wouldn't want everyone to say, "Pro Life nut jobs are all murderers" simply because one nut job killed that doctor. I hate generalizations. I'm not a member of PETA, I'm all for a good steak! I don't believe in abortion, but I don't belong to any particular organization that lobbies against it (unless you count the Catholic Church). I do believe in trying to prevent cruelty in the treatment of animals that we raise to eat. But I do eat meat. Generalizations are dangerous, IMO. They pigeon hole people, and they ignore the many differences of people by assuming certain beliefs imply that all their beliefs are the same. This creates controversy and dissent, but does nothing to further any cause.

I think that many prefer generalizations because it is easier than realizing that people are individuals and have separate thoughts...which means if you really want to know what they think, you have to make the attempt to know them individually.
