Just saw where Covington Catholic's Luke Maile was drafted in the 43rd round (pick number 1308) by the Boston Red Sox.

Congratulations Luke! Now be smart and unless they offer some crazy contract get that free education while taking in a couple of Coach Cal's victories! After you have that experience put that name in the draft again with an even more polished game.

Congrats to Luke and the Maile family. Big dream for a kid but be smart and head to Lexington for 2 or 3 years and then will probably be a top draft pick.

Same sentiments....congrats on a great honor, but this should be a no-brainer to go to UK.

 

The #1 pick in this year's MLB draft didn't even get drafted out of high school, so the sky's the limit for anybody who works hard and continuously improves.

I was listening a couple days ago to the draft and one of the broadcastors explained why they go after high school kids this late. He said that you don't expect to get a good college senior out of these later rounds, so you take your chances on a talented high school senior and hope that you could possible strike a deal with him. Some high schoolers will be very tempted to take a deal with a great historic team like Boston. Congrats Luke I'm sure you will make the right move and good luck in the pros and/or college.

It is quite possible that there is more discussion between the teams and the prospect prior to and during the draft than we know.

 

It is also possible that this, or any player could have gone fairly early in the draft for a decent price, just less than he wanted to accept.

 

So, a team like Boston, says, we'll take him as 1 of our 45 picks this year..knowing that he's not going to sign for 43rd round money. We're willing to use the summer to evaluate and get to know him better; then see how close they're willing to get to his number and/or how low the kid is willing to backpeddle. Or...he goes to school and we have a start on him for 2012...?

Yes. He was coming on strong at the end of the season. Look for him to impress in the next two years!

I believe the Red Sox retain the rights to him for three years. After his Junior year in college Luke would go back in the draft. If he decides to go to school and something goes wrong or he drops out during the next three years Boston would still be able to sign him. I believe this is how it works someone correct me if this is not right.
