Luke Maile drafted by the Boston Red Sox

Featured Replies

I understand what you are saying but i don't agree that he is a top ten round pick. If he was that good to go in the top ten rounds I don't see why they would have a hard time drafting him. Even if he was asking for alot of money unless it was a ridiculous amount. And that goes for all the teams. The Red Sox were the only team that were going to take him? I just have a hard time believeing that a top ten round pick falls all the way to 43 round. Now if he was suppose to go in the top ten rounds then went in the top 20 rounds it might be a little different. I guess Luke is the only player in high school out there asking for alot of money? The Red Sox took 14 High School kids in rounds 10 to 43. I guess all 14 of those guys weren't asking for too much money?

Also, you are saying they are losing a 43 round pick however you are clearly stating that he really isn't a 43 round pick. You are saying he is really a top ten round pick but was just drafted in the 43 round because he was asking for alot of money.

That is correct. Look at Zach Cox last year, I know he was a projected top 5 and fell all the way to somewhere around the 40th round. Do you know why he dropped this low? It's because he said he was going to college almost for sure unless he got a ton of money. So the team didn't draft him and they took a risk in the 40th round.

Zach dropped because he and his family set an amount it would take to sign. If he didn't get that amount he was going to college. They made it know what that amount was to several scouts. Zach is a great player and had a great college freshman year. So, many clubs were not ready to meet his set amount. So, Zach is in college for 2 years. He is draft eligible after his Soph year because of age.

Same with Luke. The number was high, he dropped. Simple.

I think people just refuse to accept that he needs some time in college to get better so that he IS a high draft pick. At this point in time, he was not good enough to be considered top 10. That is okay, no big deal, he's 18 and he'll get a good education and improve upon his skills at UK. Of course they're going to watch and see how he does, but if they wanted him bad enough, they would have gotten him because he thought he would be going in the top 10 rounds, and if he would have I'm sure he would have signed. He didn't come out and say "I'm going to college" and he didn't say he'd only go for some ridiculous amount of money. It is what it is ya'll.

Luke will be going to Boston during the first week of July to work out and to talk.

BTW Cincinnati, Tampa Bay and the Dodgers were all very much interested in drafting Luke.

Amen to that. Basically what I was trying to get across but you did a much better job of that!

Thank you! You just made my point!

I agree Luke needs time in college. If i sound like I'm sitting here trying to say he should have been an extremely high draft pick, then I am sorry because I'm not. All I know is that he said he wanted a good chunk of change and that is why he got drafted in the 43rd round.

.

Can we assume that this doesn't happen to most kids drafted in the late rounds?

IMO, I think Luke was expecting to skip college and sign until he was drafted in the 43rd round. I don't think a player would still be heading to Boston to try and work out/negotiate if he didn't have this in mind.

If I'm following along you seem to be saying that this trip is Luke's idea and that the Sox really have no interest in meeting with him. Or are you saying that he really has a strong interest in getting into the system? I'll agree with the latter.

I guess I read it to the other way. From everything I've read and heard late round picks usually get a "take it or leave it" offer. I read a book about a kid drafted out of college in the late rounds and he got a call telling him that his offer was $1,000 - no negotiations. They don't fly late round picks in just to tell them they are getting a small offer.

The logical way to read this trip IMO is that negotiations are ongoing.

Think about this... Last Monday he was playing at Dixie in the Ninth Region All star game! This Sunday he will be going to Lexington and playing at UK in the State All Star team! Then on Thursday July 2nd he goes to Boston to work out at Fenway, and he gets to see the Green Monster up close....

Where did I say The Sox have no interest in him? If they drafted him I'm sure they would have interest in him. Just like I said in previous posts I'm sure the Sox have interest in all their draft picks. For example, Farris was drafted in the 43rd round however I don't believe he even went to Chicago he just announced he's headed to UK. I'm saying I think before the draft Luke expected to go much higher and was ready to skip college. I still think he wants to go that route thats why he is going to fenway to work out and negotiate. IMO, most players who go that late and have a D1 scholarship would just say I'm going to go ahead and sign if they give me the money I want or they say I'm going to college to improve my draft stock.

It is my understanding that the Red Sox invite all of their draft picks to this work out. Regardless of whether he goes to college or not, what a great experience it will be to work out at Fenway with all their other draft picks.

How interested were they in drafting them? You'd think that if they had that much interest than they'd draft him before the 43rd round.

Congrats to Luke & his family. I hope he does well in his try out in Boston & can continue to turn his heads.

I feel confident that he'll be in Lexington next year. And I hope he gets drafted even earlier in 3 years.
