Luke Maile drafted by the Boston Red Sox

Featured Replies

If you were telling me that Maile was not really a 43rd round pick but rather a top 20 to 25 round pick I'd believe your statement. However, you are saying a kid drafted in the 43rd round is really a top 5 round pick? Even if the kid asked for a million dollar signing bonus then he would have been drafted that high and been given money close to that. I'm sorry but this logic just is way to far fetched! If your that good you will get drafted in the top 5 rounds and you will get money around a million dollars maybe less maybe more just depends. This tells me if Maile was asking for that much then no major league team thought his talent was worth that much hence why he wasn't taken!

We will see august 17th....

Here's the other problem with the "he's a 43rd rounder" argument.

43rd round picks get a phone call TELLING them that they get a $1,000 bonus and a plane ticket. Take it or leave it.

The fact that both sides are still talking SHOULD tell you that they're not talking chump change. When you put it out there that its going to take a lot of jack to get you to forgo UK and you are STILL talking to the team that drafted you, you're talking big $$.

That's just common sense. There would be no conversation if they were talking $1,000 or even $50k.

Its not that difficult .

Just because they are still in negotiation has no significance on how much money they are talking. They're still in negotiation because Maile truly is considering skipping college and going pro. That's just my opinion, not syaing you have to believe it!

Look at what you are saying. Your telling me that Luke is basically the only 43rd round player who is getting offered 500k. However, every other player drafted in the 43rd round is just getting a 1,000 signing bonus take it or leave it?

Look at that! The majority of 43rd players are getting a $1,000 SIGNING BONUS! So Luke is going to get 499,000 more then all of these guys?!

Come on man....

And ask yourself this, will the Red Sox be willing to watch someone through the summer, plus bring them to Fenway for a game, when they're only offering $1,000? No chance.

MLB teams have the upper-hand at all times. The kid can make a choice that will be great for him either way. The college has a chance of being screwed though.

Legacy - while you're certainly entitled to your own opinions, you need to recognize that occasionally someone else may have a little "inside" information and therefore his opinion is a bit more fact-based. The Red Sox have better things to do with their time than quibble with a 43rd round pick over a signing bonus of $1K or $5K. You are kidding yourself if you think they are not talking about some sizeable numbers.

When did I say that I knew for sure his signing bonus was for 1k? It could possibly be all the way up to a 100k even 200k however i have a hard time believeing a kid drafted in the 43rd round is being offered half a million dollars! It just doesn't happen when the majority of kids in the 43rd round get 1k or even 5k.

If I'm not mistaken I believe all of their draft picks are invited to come up to fenway to show their skills. I don't see why the Red Sox wouldn't watch all their draft picks who could possibly sign at the last second? Most players that are drafted in the later rounds just turn down the offer and head to college. I understand Maile is an exception but I seriously doubt he is being offered a half a million dollars when the majority of that round the players are being offered 1k or 5k!

I never onced said oh he is for sure being offered 1k, 5k, or even 50k. In an earlier post I asked all you inside info guys how much he was asking for etc and no one can seem to find an answer! justletmeplay was the only guy who gave me some info and he basically mentioned that he was offered anywhere from 300k to 500k.

Yes he might be offered 100k or maybe even 200k but is that the 500k? No! And from what I heard he hasn't even been offered a big contract like that yet! It's going to be a last minute offer if there is a better offer then before!

To sum up what I'm saying...IMO I don't think saying he is a top 5 round pick is legit. I don't see how a player who is that good can fall all the way to the 43rd round. Even if he was asking for a lot of money, if he was selected in those rounds he would have gotten a million maybe more or less just depends. Now if your telling me he is a top 20 to 25 round pick then yeah that's possible. That's why I believe the Red Sox are still in negotiations with him. I just think saying he was offered 500k is a little far fetched because of where he was drafted.

You all can think I'm wrong but we will ultimately see on August 17th!:ylsuper:

Chaz Roe from Lexington was picked 32nd overall a few years ago and got somewhere in the $1-2mil signing bonus and that's straight from UK Head Coach Gary Henderson. A friend of mine that graduated high school in 2004 (tall lefty who threw smoke) was drafted in the 43rd-45th round by the White Sox. He didn't even get a phone call that day and then received an offer sheet in the mail with a signing bonus somewhere in the $500-1000 range.

From multiple sources (none within the Maile family), I'm pretty confident in saying that Luke has been offered in the $400-500k range and is still deciding. Legacy, using those two examples I've provided, what type of player do you think the Sox consider Maile to be closer to? Top 5 or Bottom 5?

I'm not trying to convince you of anything...primarily I just want to clarify that I was in no way trying to spin maile as something he's not. He is a 43rd round pick. That's the only fact we have!

I was simply enjoying discussing the process in general and drawing some possible parallels to maile's situation based upon what i've learned of this process.

The fact is there are multiple examples over the years of kids getting above-slot money, even drastically above slot, in every round. NOT TO SAY THIS KID DESERVES IT OR IS GOING TO GET IT...simply to say "hey wouldn't it be cool if a local kid got one of these type of offers". In addition, relative to maile or not; kids do drop from top 10 rounds to bottom 10 rounds (or off the chart completely) due to 'signability', or the lack of. It's not something invented here to convince anyone that Luke is special or better than he his or whatever.

You seem to want to insist that that means he wans't good enough to even be considered...well, obviously he wasn't good enough in any team's eyes to get what he wanted off the bat! There's really no question about that....and....he probably isn't good enough in anyone's eyes to get what he wants late. But the point is, it definitely does happen, and his process, so far, lays out similarly to the few who have seen that happen.

So for those of us baseball junkies who root for every local kid and enjoy sharing the excitement, ... it's not a stretch whatsoever to say..."hey, it's possible..." nothing more.

You sure your friend wasn't a tall righty who threw smoke?

You sure your friend wasn't a tall righty who threw smoke?

I was wondering the same.

You sure your friend wasn't a tall righty who threw smoke?

Made the story sound better....and I couldn't remember. He didn't have a Zito-esque hook like one pitcher on that team, I know that much.

You sure your friend wasn't a tall righty who threw smoke?

Actually he was a really tall lefty who threw smoke!

Actually he was a really tall lefty who threw smoke!

I don't know who you're talking about, but I'm pretty confident TillTheBattleIsWon is talking about Stephen Muck, and he's a righty...

Article from Ryan Ernst

Covington Catholic catcher Luke Maile will not sign with the Boston Red Sox, the team that selected him in the 43rd round of this year's First-Year Player Draft. Maile's father Rich confirmed the decision today.

"Boston is not going to make an offer," Rich Maile said.

Luke Maile, the three-time Enquirer player of the year and reigning Mr. Baseball, asked for "first- or second-round money," according to his father. Boston, he said, indicated it was comfortable offering "third- to sixth-round money."

Theoldguy comment:

Boston as Rich said was willing to pay Luke from 3rd to 6th round money, but Luke and his Dad felt that they were worth first or second round money.

Who was right and who was wrong? We will see in another couple of years!

Me? Sports are for fun, but getting a great education last a lifetime.
