As far as playing Semi-State in three days: There's always going to be a good chance that will never happen because of the weather we have here in late spring. Take for instance Semi-State 3 between E'town and Bullitt East. Game 1 was Monday night, no problem. Game 2 got pushed back to Thursday because of Wednesday's storms, and then eventually pushed to Friday because of Thursday's storms.

 

And then you had to deal with graduation for both teams. E'town's graduation was Friday night, and Bullitt East's was this afternoon before Game 3.

 

But, had they played Game 2 on Tuesday, we wouldn't be having this discussion. And besides, I think it's up to the tournament host to determine the schedule. If they want to have a day off between the first two games, that's up to them and not the KHSAA. May be wrong on that, I don't know. But I always thought it was up to the host sites to make the schedule.

 

If I'm not mistaken I believe the KHSAA mandated that EVERY semi-state set-up was to be Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Then adjustments had to be made because of weather and graduations.

Next year you won't have to worry about the Semi-State schedule.

Has that been finalized yet? From what I've been told, it's still in the discussion stage.

If they can make it work, all 16 teams at Applebees is a much better setup. I am guessing it will be single elimination and not a double elimination like the softball state tournament uses.

Yes on the KHSAA web site for next seasons tournament info found under 2009-10 important dates there is no sectional or semi state it has Baseball Regionals May 31-June 8 then the State Tournament June 14-18 at Applebee's Park.

Under corresponding dates, they still have a semistate in place for 2010.

IMO, I think the semi-state is good but not great.....here is how i would set it up:

 

1. All region winners (1-16) advance to state tournement

2. Do random draw on those teams

3. Play first round of region at random college facilities (UK, U of L, EKU, WKU)

For Example: South Laurel vs. Estill County @UK Danville vs. Lex. Cath @EKU

Trinity vs. Anderson @ WKU and so on!

4. Then send the remaining 8 teams to Applebee's Park

5. Championship game goes to championship series in a best of 3 series to crown the state champion !!!

Not a good idea ... if some teams play at Applebee's, the others should as well.

That's too far spread out.

 

At least with the semi-state format, teams are playing somewhat close to home. And with the way the economy is right now, that's a good thing.
