How Does Highlands Keep Performing at a High Level?

Featured Replies

It's been discussed many times, but the attached article on the history of the Fort Thomas Junior Football League probably provides as much insight as anything.

P.S. Any truth to the rumor that parochial students will be allowed to play in the Campbell County Middle School league (not Red Devils) this fall?

I have a dumb question: if this is true, what are the implications?

Good article!

Does anyone know the date/time/opponent for Highlands' preseason scrimmage this year? I'm thinking it's against Male. Also, HHS will only have one scrimmage, correct?

The scrimmage against Male is in Fort Thomas on Friday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. It is the only scrimmage.

As stated in a number of previous threads. Quality coaching is the key. Add to that committed athletes and families. It's expected and nothing less is accepted.

I respect Highlands. That being said the hair stands up on my arms everytime I am in Ft. Thomas. The reason for that is I am a Cov Cath supporter. I think 7 is correct. The community in Ft. Thomas is very close and football is an intragal part of that community. It matters to everyone! As soon as football is over the speak around town is what is the team going to be like next year. The kids in Ft. Thomas grow up hearing this and cant wait until their high school years so they can leave their mark. Parents support and expect excellence and the players are more than willing to live up to their end of the bargain. The FTJFL does a great job of building young talent and fostering a LOVE for football. There isnt a qusetion when the players get to high school of "Are you going to play?" They just do, and do it well. Add that to excellent coaching and you get a (it pains me to say it) great product on the field. If any of you have seen Go Tigers about Massilion, it is kinda like that. From birth for most it is football. I respect that....but still look forward to the day when things are more even between HHS and CCH (and that day is coming!)

Orion - It's not often that rivals can speak so kindly of one another. I'm definitely one of the guilty ones in that department. Very nice post. :thumb:

Highlands has all the pieces of the puzzle, to be good forever. I dont see anyway that they will be stopped from being in the top tier for a long time to come. Community, tradition, feeder system, facilities, and so on. Now if they were in another state where there were more established programs that rival them it would be different, but in Kentucky they have a monopoly. I respect them more than Trinity or St. X. due to the fact that they have a disadvantage in numbers for thier division and MOST of the kids there are from the area.

The vast majority of Cov Cath fans have enormous respect for the Highlands program. This is not to say we wouldn't like some on field pay back...and soon. But, like a Red Sox fan commenting on the Yankees or an Oklahoma fan commenting on the Gators, how can you ignore the trophies? Two years ago I sat in the Cov Cath bleachers during the first half of the regular season game at Wooten Field and then sat on the Highlands side during the 3rd quarter. You couldn't find two more similiar groups of people. Long live the rivalry.

Are not most of the kids at Trinity and St. X from Louisville?

 I don't even know how to respond to that.......

One thing I've learned about Highlands over the years, you may not like them, but you've gotta respect them. Their coaches install a great work ethic in them at a young age, and know how to get the best out of what they have. Tremendous coaching staff up there, they deserve all the credit in the world for the job they do, as do the athletes for putting in the work they do. Always gonna be a bright future for Highlands.

It was a serious question. I really don't know. Do they have a lot of kids from Indiana? Oldham, Shelby, and Bullit County?
