Dead Animal Question

Featured Replies

I was just out fertilizing my plants when I noticed a bad odor. I followed the flies to a dead animal in the bushes. Fairly good size..... I think it is a racoon. It is full of maggots. :puke: I know the right thing to do is to shovel it into a garbage bag. However, the coward in me is thinking about letting nature take its course. Question is, does anyone know how long it takes for nature to take its course? I would much rather shovel a bunch of bones than the nasty mess that is there now.

It may take a few weeks, but you run the risk of drawing other animals to it if you leave it out.

Well, after several episides of gagging and breath holding, I am proud to say that I bagged that nasty thing......turned out to be a possum. Even double bagged it! Double whammy in that nasty smell and the flies who were feeding on that maggot covered animal that came after me as I was bagging it. I need a shower.

I think I would rather face the Wolfman, mummy or Sasquatch. :p

Thank goodness tomorrow is garbage day.

One thing I learned today, as fragrant as lilacs are, they can't cover up the smell of a dead animal. :puke:

Thank you. I feel as though I faced the challenge with courage (and very little dignity)!

Bravo. :thumb:

What if it is a zombie racoon?????

Honestly, it was a no win situation. The smell and other stuff for a couple of weeks, forgetting about it and stepping into it later on and such (happened here with a dead frog), or doing what you did. You probably did the lesser of the two evils. (My wife would have made me do it before we would have watched nature be nature for very long.)

Well done! Not many smells worse then a rotting carcass.

Wasnt real hungry for dinner. I should probably shovel dead animals every day. Might be a unique weight loss system.

I fyou ever have to deal with that again, I would suggest putting a little Vicks Vapor rub in your nose. Granted, it isnt the best smelling stuff either, but it will block the dead animal smell.
