Chenoweth Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I was reading a Memphis message board and a memphis fan expressed concern that they would become like UC. It got me thinking about how similar the rise and possibly the fall of both teams resemble each other. - Both teams had proud histories but were stuggling up until they hired a program elevating coach. - Both coaches had final for runs and amazing regular season records (in similar weak conferences). - Because of circumstances around their exit both programexperienced exceptional and unimaginable harm in trying to pick up the pieces and carry on. UC has still not recovered. Memphis is in much better shape and position to carry on.:idunno:
westsider Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 - Both coaches had final for runs and amazing regular season records (in similar weak conferences).I would disagree with this point. Conference USA now doesn't compare to the league when Cincinnati, Louisville and the rest of the new Big Easters were on board.
CatsCatsCats Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Very true, and even though it hasn't been that long ago when Cincy was really good, the era's are different. Memphis is still a place that quality players will look at going to. They lost plenty this year, and they may not get a Derrick Rose or Tyreke Evans type player every year, but they will be fine.
gametime Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Apples and anchovies. Cal didn't leave their program for dead...

You imply UC is no longer getting talented players. They went from 1 scholarship player to the middle of the Big East in 2 years, and are set to make another move up the conference in 09-10...
westsider Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 And the coaches' departures aren't nearly comparable, either ...
gchs_uk9 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I would disagree with this point. Conference USA now doesn't compare to the league when Cincinnati, Louisville and the rest of the new Big Easters were on board. Just for clarification, when Cincinnati went to the Final Four in 1992 they were playing in the Great Midwest Conference along with DePaul, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis and UAB.

They are on the way back, and will be fine. I think Memphis' fall will not be as far down or as long. That is what I was saying.
00Rocket28 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Cronin is a heckuva coach, he'll get UC back to the top 25 regularly VERY soon IMO

gametime Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Really? I just don't see it. 18 wins overall and 8 in the Big East without a PG in what was the deepest and toughest conference in the land. The end of the season was frustrating, but a ton of progress was made once again. It was a self imposed death penalty. You don't just snap your fingers and poof it's back...

ColonelCrazy Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 You don't just snap your fingers and poof it's back... Unless you hire John Calipari....
