I find it funny that the Gallatin County contingent is always harping on Shelton. Not sure what this kid ever did to anyone. From my perspective I see a kid that dominates the lane on the defensive end, owns the glass and scores double digits every night. I guess those tinted glasses have also shifted to Colligan and Williams. Colligan was 3rd in FG% in the entire state. Hopefully someone will teach him better so he can be 1st or 2nd next year. This is obviously a player whose low post skills are lacking. Williams was a freshmen that played back up minutes on the varsity but when playing showed flashes of being a very good post player. Not once did I make a comment about him. I used to work with his Uncle, he seems like a nice kid.

So we want to see the big man get better. And that is saying alot since we are rivals. If Shelton was more aggresive, He would be unstoppable. If the guards let him pound the block for 20 points, then every once in a while step out and hit a 3, then he maybe all-state potential.

Williams shooting % was higher than Colligan's he just didnt get up enough shots to be ranked in the KHSAA stats

There hasn't been much said about the prospects for North Oldham and South Oldham. They should figure into the mix before it is all said and done, especially South. The folks at South like to stay just below the radar screen, but this year might be the season that brings attention to the Dragons. North was pretty high-powered and hitting on all cylinders early this past season, and the Mustangs are capable of doing the same again in 2009-10. It would be wise to not overlook these two teams!

South was region runner in their first season. North was semifinalist in 2008. That's at least 3.

North's coaching strategies is what hurts them for the most part. They have good players, but the coaches need to learn that you can't press and try to "run n gun" everyone. In close games they tend to have empty possesions and it ends up hurting them. Both North and South will have good teams this year.

Walton should be tough this year. They return all starters and have a new head coach. Grant County lost 4 seniors including 2 all region players but return starters Isaiah Wartman and Mike Davis. They will be young but I look for them to make some noise toward the end of the year.

Much debate in the thread, but no early top five or top 10 lists. C'mon somebody's gotta be bursting at the seams ready to give the first official top five.

What about Anderson Co? I know they lost Penney but they will still be a top 5 team IMO.

1. Anderson County - defending champs, highest ranked returning player from last years all region team in Russell - a beast, Humphries is a 6'5 stud, Ruggles is 6'3 quality player and they return their point guard. Throw in the best coach in the region and Anderson is the pick.

2. Shelby County - best talent in the region every year!! Boomer is the quickest point guard in the region, Tomlinson has started for 3 years, Johnson is not one of my favorite players, but he is the most talented player in the region, Beach is a quality pivot man, Payton is a good big with a lot of spring, Hicks is a future all state player and they have more that I don't even know the names of - deep and talented.

3. North Oldham - Foley and Rowan are potential all region. Supporting cast is good and deep. Style of play is aggressive. You better be able to handle pressure or they will wear you out. Best young talent in Oldham County has been headed to North as of late.

 

The rest in any order. Owen, Henry, Gallatin can all argue to have a shot. Owen has size- no guards. Henry has guards - no size, no coach. Gallatin has guards, no size.

Simon Kenton has two very good players in Sorrell and Chambers, but they are unproven after that.

Walton has size and guards and a new coach. They could be a team to watch, but it is very difficult to win a region after winning less than half your games the year before.

Oldham has young talent - no go to player. Good athletes, but young. Holland will have talent and he does a good job. It will be interesting to see if urban kids buy in to Holland as well as the country boys at Henry.

South Oldham is always one of the best offensive teams in the region. If they can add defense to their list of talents they will be dangerous!!

The other teams in the region are not contenders this year.
