Up and Coming Big Men in KY

Featured Replies

Zeke Pike will be the "big man" at Dixie next year. Zeke plays more of a forward position though. He does post up a lot, but for how big he is he has an effective dribble drive, and can shoot from the 15 foot range fairly well. Once he develops more of an outside jumper, and perfects some small stuff I see Zeke easily being a top player in NKY and a porblem for teams to guard.

Hard to have a big man list in KY right now and leave off Matt St. John from South Laurel. Between 6'8" & 6'9", appears to still be growing. Was South Laurel's go to man last year. Scouts or Rivals one had him listed as a top 10 big man in the country early last season for the graduating class of 2010. He averaged a double double last year, and had a personal best 32 rebounds in one postseason game. I am not sure if he is top 10 big men in the country, but he is definitely one of the best in KY.

South has the potential to have another even taller player in the next few seasons. They have a 7th grader (Helton) who is currently 6'6" and still growing rapidly. He is the cousin of former South Laurel PG Ty Proffitt. He is still uncoordinated, but as a 6'6" 13-14 yr old kid, I am sure that will come with time. He needs to be more agressive, but he surely will have the height.

Wow. 32 rebounds in one game is very impressive! The bluegrassinsider has Matt St. John listed as the 4th best player in the state behind Gibbs, Pittman, and Guyn. Rivals no longer has him listed in their tops for big men, but he sounds like a good player. Hopefully he'll progress even more this year and get some good looks.

Another big boy in No. KY that will be able to play in the paint. Sounds good. I didn't see him take any jump shots, but he did look strong down low. Good rebounder too.

As he has matured and learned to control his emotions better, he has become a much more effective player. He can also step out and shoot the outside shot effectively. Like I said, I wasn't convinced he should be in the top 10 in the nation, but no doubt he is one of the better big men in KY right now.

After watching the state AAU, Colt Barnhill from East Carter can play with any post player in the state!:thumb:

I am going to throw a name out there not many have heard of. Shaun Wheat of Cumberland Co. he is going to be a senior he is only 6'2 or 6'3 and plays in the post due ot their style of play, but he led the state in fg percentage throughout the season according to khsaa and he had 27 rebounds in their triple overtime loss to Bowling Green, a 4th region tourn. record.

I agree, Jody Demling of the Courier Journal called him a sleeper in 2010 class after attending the State AAU. He really took Pittman out of his inside game and showed all week he could score down low no matter who was guarding him.

I have been hearing good things about Barnhill. I watched the DS 17u team some at the AAU tourney. Fun group to watch, and they all play well together.

Impressed with Barnhill also......can't believe Grubbs from Highlands doesn't get a mention. The kid has some offensive game and moves well on the court for a footballer !

Don't tell a soul...Good Point he's as good a true post player as you'll find in Northern KY as a matter of fact whose better? He looked pretty good against Barnhill at the state AAU tournament scoring 15 points. Barnhill is a really nice player also he scored 16 points in the same game. Not to many people are going to push Tyler around he's about 15 pounds lighter than he was last basketball season and is really working hard on his strength and conditioning. Averaged 13 points a game last weekend playing against the likes of Barnhill, O'Conner, and Evans (Shining Stars-McFarland). Watched him and St. John wrestle on the block last spring and he more than held his own. He's doing football conditioning 3 days a week and Flynn has him attending open gym basketball twice a week. Scored in the mid-twenties on his ACT test.

Heard his AAU team KY Firebirds are traveling up to Sandusky,OH to play in the Cedar Point Extravaganza tournament this weekend.

All the stats are great! Sounds like a good kid and kid player. I'll have to get out to watch him this coming season. I think it's especially good, and to be commended on the solid ACT score.

Not to take anything away from Mr. Grubbs because he was a hard nose player that showed his skill during the game, but I believe #33 for the DSAS was guarding him not Colt. But Grubbs is a very talented kid and gets it done in the paint.

Good luck to the Firebirds. Jack Stewart will be playing up with this team this weekend.

Jack Stewart really seems to be a good up and coming player in No. KY. Good luck to him and the KY Firebirds.

The Firebirds were one of the biggest suprises for me at the KY state tourney. They were a very good basketball team. Really liked watching them play.

Grubbs is a BIG boy. Very hard to guard in the post.
