Up and Coming Big Men in KY

Featured Replies

How many times have you seen Fant and Gibbs play? Fant is easily the best big man in the state for his class and Gibbs is rapidly emerging as one of the hottest prospects in the state for the c/o 2010.

Knipp is a solid player but not nearly as sound as those two. Both are complete players offensively and defensively. Knipp struggles defensively with athletic kids who are his size. See the Holmes game against Pittman as evidence. He benefitted greatly from playing with the Faulkners and Ferguson throughout his young career because very rarely was he forced to create off the dribble or use post moves with his back to the basket to score.

Fant and Gibbs are both much more attractive prospects.

IMO, Fant and Knipp are the best two players in the class of 2011.

IMO, Fant and Knipp are the best two players in the class of 2011.

I'd rank the c/o 2011 like this:

1. Fant

2. Stenzel

3. Zollo

4. Shanklin

5. Knipp

Don't be surprised if Purvis of GRC passes up Knipp after this season as well. He had to sit out this past year with an injury but the kid is a player and already has a D1 offer from Morehead.

You are very much entitled to your opinion and it is respected. But, just as much as you are going to give your say... So will I.

You are forgetting that O'Connor is going to be a Senior. Stauffer just a Junior. For being a whole year behind, the stats are pretty comparable, if not dead even. You must admit that... As far as working without the ball on offense, you are way off here IMO. The kid works so hard on both sides of the basktball floor. Maybe he does question some calls, but what passionate, competitive basketball player doesnt. As much as you say that this is his flaw, it's that same fire that burns in him to wanna be great and makes him a real good ball player. Or would you rather these boys just lay down. IMO it's his fire and passion that makes him so good as just a sophomore.

As far as summer ball, I've seen him a few times in Louisville and in a tournament in Cincinnati... Seems to be playing well to me. Yet to see anyone push him around or shut him down.

I thought the thread was about best big men not just best sophomore big men?

Most of the really good players I have seen compete just as hard and have that seem intensity but don't question calls. Have never seen a ref change his call because a player questions the call.

After watching the Derek Smith All Stars (which includes Stenzel, Fant,Shanklin, and Knipp) in their last two tourneys, Knipp and Fant have been the most consistent. Knipp had a great state tourney and if he contiunes to play the way he has this spring in the July evualation period, he will be getting high major looks. As far as Zollo, what does he do better than Knipp? I think their style of play is very similiar, but Knipp is just better in almost every catorgory. The one to watch out for is Remel Abell. Has also been very consistent this spring. Extreamly fast and athletic, has good skills and a good motor. As far as a top 5, mine would look like this.

1a. Fant

1b. Knipp

3. Stenzel

4. Shanklin

5. Abell

Knipp is pretty solid offensively but it's his defense that lacks and makes the players I named better than him IMO. He is able to score, but struggles to defend the more athletic big men. (Again, see the Holmes game against Pittman as a perfect example, or the game against Ballard when 6'4 Jones really had his way down low) Zollo is more fundamentally sound at both ends of the floor and is a beast on the boards. Knipp really has never had to create his own shot because of the Faulkners and Ferg. It will be interesting to see how he does this upcoming season. I think a lot of his success should be attributed to having those three around him, always setting him up. Very rarely does he create off the dribble and he struggles with his back to the rim.

As far as Abell, I completely agree. He and Marks, both of Eastern, are going to be one of the best 1-2 scoring combos in the state over the next two years.

I'll second that. I was impressed with his offensive skills, including his ability to hit outside shots, and he made a couple nice drives when I saw him at the Bearcat Classic a couple weeks ago. If he can improve his defense, the sky's the limit.

It definitely is about the best big man in the state and in NKY. But, I just throw that in there because the stats are extremely comparable (even though you dont seem to want to admit that), if not dead even. That being said Stauffer is a Sophomore. Therefore, Stauffer may have more upside.

I absolutely agree with you here. It's not always smart to question refs. Let the coaches worry about it. But that competitive nature drives these kids.

The fact that you say MOST of the really good players you see compete dont question calls is funny to me personally... What about college ball? Because those are the guys that compete at the highest level (excluding the NBA, where they always complain, but we'll leave them out of this) and you see them questioning A LOT of calls. I see kids in every tournament I'm at that questions calls. They wanna win! If a kid truly feels like there was a missed call they will all most certainly have something to say. Whether they "think" it or "say" it, It going to affect them just the same.

I believe you need to include Colt Barnhill from East Carter in this discussion. Many people may not know who this very talented big man is because it is his first year playing AAU and they have had the luxury of playing Elliott in District and Regional tournaments throughout highschool. Look for him to put up some big numbers throughout the summer and ask T. Knipp from Elliott how good this kid is.

Tregg Setty can be added to the list. Mason County.

This comparison between Stauffer and O'conner is getting very picky. Let me throw out one statistic that might alter some opionions on the defensive end. This year, O'conner took 38 charges. Thats the ultimate sacrifice on defense if you ask me. I would like to see that stat category compared to Stauffer's. O'conner does a lot of little things that make tremendous contributions. Simple things as taking charges, altering shots, blocking shots, etc. For how long and big he is, he is a stud down at the defensive end.

All are very quick and they play the game to where it's fun to watch. A very talented group. They get the ball up and down the floor fast and play the game like it's suppose to be played. None of that old draggie, boring, slow stuff for this group.:taz:

For how long and big (6'8") he is, and having that additional year, some would argue that his stats should be better than a sophomore who is only 6'5", or 6'6" and plays a very like position on the floor. For how long and big he is (6'8") he absolutely should be a stud down low on defense. As for doing the little things, I have seen Stauffer take charges in some summer tournaments this year. As far as altering and blocking shots, he can do that as well. If you wanna say it's getting picky, the stats or subjects you just brought up are picky. Stauffer does a lot for his teams. Some would also argue about leadership. It's not listed as a stat, but equally as important.

Both are good players. Both have like stats. As I have stated in an earlier post, I have not had much of an opportunity to see O'Connor play. But, for as long as this argument has gone on, admit it or not, his stats are very much comparable to others.

Does O'Connor play summer ball?

Treg Setty does not belong in this thread. Pervis from Clark County will make MAJOR waves this year. Timmy Knipp may end up with a supporting cast to showcase his abilities very well!

Yes O'Conner does play summer ball for Shining Stars- Coach Bundy - I believe?
