WASHINGTON - Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter is in talks to switch parties, sources told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Separately, the Washington Post reported that Specter will switch parties.

The move would give Democrats a filibuster-proof 60 seats if Al Franken is seated in the Minnesota.

Can't say this really surprises me. Specter was the biggest RINO in office.

Scary stuff. No party should have more than 60 senators.

Will this have any effect on how he votes? If so, isn't that a telling statement?

RINO anyway. We will get them back, after all these taxes.

I really wonder what took so long.

I think it will have some effect. Votes where Specter does not have a dog in the fight you can now expect him to vote Democrat instead of Republican. For many important votes Spector was just as likely to vote with the Democrats as vote with the Republicans. It will also be interesting to see if the Democrat leadership will be able to keep him on the reservation more often than the Republican leadership.

He is a Liberal anyway, no big surprise from me.

Does this re-enforce the perception that moderates are not welcome?

If Specter was a moderate, but he was as liberal as they get.

And this move was based on the fact that Specter didn't stand a chance in his primary.

Political CYA rather than ideology? Who'd a thought it?

Specter has been a party coward for many years. His time is short, he has nothing to lose.

Does this re-enforce the perception that moderates are not welcome?

There are no moderates in the Republican party only RINO's.

Does this re-enforce the perception that moderates are not welcome?

Not at all. I would love to see a moderate Senator from California, New York, or Massachusetts.

This along with Joe Lieberman, yes.

Not at all. I would love to see a moderate Senator from California, New York, or Massachusetts.

A pro-choice moderate?
