Tilghman, Ballard Memorial coaches suspended for one game

Featured Replies

Randy Wyatt of Paducah Tilghman and Chris Cooper of Ballard Memorial have been suspended for one game each because their teams participated in an extra scrimmage last year.

Tilghman and Ballard did a 7-on-7 session in August, after the official start of practice, which counts as a scrimmage.

The Paducah Sun reported it in Wednesday's editions. Their website is a pay site so I can't provide a working link.

This is Tilghman's second violation in less than a year. They had to forfeit a game last season because of an ineligible player, and the forfeit cost them a playoff berth.

I talked to someone about this recently. Is there any truth to the rumor that the two schools knew before the scrimmage what they were doing was a violation but did it anyway?

In 2006 CCH had an "extra" 7-on-7 and only had to give up real scrimmages if I recall. I assume the "knowing" part caused the KHSAA to give a suspension instead??

I've wondered the same thing ...

What game will they have to drop? Hoptown is scheduled (and contracted) to open with Tilghman this year on the 21st.

Neither team is dropping a game ... the head coaches will not be able to coach in the first game of the season.

I got ya, thanks.

This is truly sad.

Yea but You got to love it when they get caught, stupidity doesn't count.

Even I knew that rule.

Don't see yourself short. Your smarter than you think.:D

Ok...explain to me how they (the coaches) wouldn't automatically know that this was illegal.

I believe that is the issue, they did know and did it anyway.

What would Paducah Tilghman (big-time 3A school) and Ballard Memorial (little-time 1A school) have to gain by illegally playing a 3rd scrimmage against one another? Who benefits? Was it worth being suspended for the opening game?

Just a little background that might shed a little more light on things.

The two coaches, Wyatt and Cooper, were teammates at Tilghman in the late 1980s and may have even been on the staff together early in Perry Thomas' tenure at Tilghman ... I don't know for sure. Tilghman was trying to install a spread offense, and Ballard was doing something similar, I believe. Both were first-year head coaches and maybe they felt they needed a little edge.

It was actually a 7-on-7 session, not a full-blown scrimmage.

The interesting thing is that this occurred last August, but it's my understanding that neither school reported it to the KHSAA until sometime in January.

I'm sorry but PT returned the greater part of the team that nearly went to the State Championship the year beore and then gets beat by Muhlenburg South the next year...I don't think PT uderstood much of anything they were doing last year.
