In one of the game pictures from above of Ryle's bench, would that be the "Cal-boy" sitting on their bench? Is he one of the assistant coach's?

 

The fifth of paNDA's pictures (and doesn't he do a GREAT job with those?!?!) shows Assistant Coaches Chris Douthit (on the end to the right) and Callen Cheesman next.

Refresh my memory. Wasn't there concern amongst some of the Cru faithful about the coach and his lack of experience?

 

I know IHM's 8th grade girls missed him this year.

Ryle has some coaching issues they need to address, it appears they have been outcoached numerous times this year. As far as their offense, the old three point addidage applies "If you live by the three point shot you will certainly die by it sooner or later" Ryle has an extremely talented young team it would be a shame to see them not suceed because the coaching staff doesn't know how to utilize that talant. Good luck next year to the returning players.

 

The Ryle team has a lot of problems.

 

Three people on the bench think they are the head coach. I'm not sure which one is right.

 

They don't have a point guard.

 

Not one single competent/confident ball handler.

 

Look at the assist to turnover ratio for their "point guard".

 

They have girls playing out of position.

(the most logical choice for point guard is playing on the post!)

 

They went 19-10 - with a soft schedule.

 

Of the 29 games they played, only 12 games were against teams with winning records.

Ryle won 6 of these 12 games.

This looks "OK" until you look at who they beat in four of these games.

 

1. Walton Verona.

Except for Cooper, Ryle was the only 9th Region school to even schedule Walton Verona. I guess this was a "grudge match" game.

 

2. Lewis County.

From the very weak 16th Region.

 

3. Conner.

This was after Conner lost their point guard and center for the season. The depleted Conner team still took Ryle to the wire.

 

4. Campbell County.

Ryle won in Overtime. NCC, Boone, Notre Dame and Simon Kenton all handled Campbell Co. with ease.

 

Ryle was the beneficiary of a perfect storm against Notre Dame. They had an incredibly hot shooting night. Ryle went 6-10 from behind the arc and 22-25 (88%) from the free throw line. That performance would be difficult/impossible to duplicate. For the season Ryle was 39% from three point range and 64% for FT's.

 

7 of the 10 games that Ryle lost were to teams from their own 9th Region.

 

You have to be competitive with teams from Lexington and Louisville if you want to be recognized as a tough team.

 

Ryle played 3 teams from the 11th region, and lost to all three of them.

This includes Henry Clay who went 9-20 for the season.

It also includes Scott County who's team consists of (6) 7th graders, (2) Freshman, (5) Sophomores and (2) Juniors.

Now that's a young team.

 

During the course of the season Ryle managed to lose their best player (and potential future Miss Basketball candidate), Sydney Moss.

From what I understand this situation could have been, should have been, handled MUCH better.

 

I have been told that ~1/3 of the team wanted to lose the first game of the district in order to bring this season to an end.

 

Approximately the same number say they will not be back next year.

 

It seems they have a lot to work on before next Fall.

Would be willing to bet the "1/3 of the team wanted to lose the first game of the district in order to bring this season to an end." would be referring to the girls sitting the bench (thinking they could perform better than the girls on the floor), and not the 7 or 8 girls that played their hearts out and were in tears following the loss in the St. Henry game.

On these sites, I have read where you repeatedly have nothing good to say about the point guards. This position has not been played by the same player all year. Jump is the initial person to start in the lineup playing this position. I know that she has had games where she has struggled but at the same time she has been very successful. Cheesman has also played this position and has played it much more recently. As far as the February games when Jump and Cheesman are in there together, the other teams have taken off the press and stayed back. Cheesman has usually been at the point and when she gets the ball in the backcourt then she is off running full speed and breaking the press. These two girls work very well together. As far as turnovers, these girls have decreased their numbers considering that they are always handling the ball. If you look on the Cincinnati website, you will see that their turnover numbers have decreased while assists have gone up. These girls probably make less turnovers than others on the team. As far as other point guards that I have seen this year, overall I have not been very impressed other than watching a Bradley from Boone. If you want to compare the Ryle point guards to her then that is fine - compare them to a senior - that's real fair considering they are only a sophmore and freshman. I am not really sure what you expect from these girls.

 

You also made reference to a post player playing the point guard position. I am assuming that you are referring to Crittendon. I don't want to take anything away from her because she is a phenomenal player. I don't think her being a point guard is the best utilization of her on the team. She is far better at the post or wing. She is able to rebound and shoots well. As for her being the point guard, I have seen games where she has struggled with handling the ball against other post players. She has a tendency to make more turnovers when she has to handle the ball a lot. Again not taking anything away from her!

 

As for the Moss issue, I am not sure how that was handled. I do believe that she was given the opportunity to come on the team well after the season had started. She was given every opportunity to play her game. In the games she was allowed to shoot as many times as she wanted. In some games this was very successful for her and the team and then in other games she was not as successful and missed alot. As for leaving the team, it was my understanding that it was her choice.

 

You referred to Ryle not playing a hard schedule. From my recollection, this team has by far played the hardest schedule Ryle has ever seen - and has ended with a winning record. I'm not sure who you want them to play. They play everyone in the region like everyone else. They beat NCC and Notre Dame. They played extremely close with Highlands, Boone and Conner. I'm not making excuses for their losses but at the same time you have to look at their youth. They basically play only 8th, 9th and 10th graders. I know other teams are young but a lot of the teams are older. You have to look at that aspect to some degree.

 

As for the coaching staff, I believe that there records speak for themselves. From my observation there is only one head coach - Patti Oliverio. I have never seen either of the assistants take over her position. She has always been the one conducting huddles/timeouts. The assistants usually get up and stand behind the players during these times. I think the two assistants are there to keep the girls focused and motivate them. I definitely agree that Oliverio needs to be more complimentary to the girls and try to motivate them more.

 

You referenced players not returning next year to play. If this is true then this needs to be addressed. The parents need to either discuss with the head coach, the AD or principal. I'm not sure of the chain of command but I do know that if there is a problem then things need to be brought to peoples attention. If the parents sit back and do nothing then nothing will ever be resolved and corrected.

 

As for the girls that played this year, I just want to say that I enjoyed watching you all play on the teams. You are fun to watch! Try to look at the positive and not focus on the negative.

Not accurate. Walton Verona also played Villa Madonna, Bellevue and Lloyd.

Didn't we go through this last year as well? Disgrunted parents/fans of Walton Verona mad about the young girls getting varsity PT?
