Question about coaching

Featured Replies

I have a hypothetical question, want to hear some opinions. Lets say you are coaching an 8th grade badminton team, just for the sake of the arguement, and you get asked to compete in a 9th grade tournament sponsored by the badminton team you formally coached. The team you use to coach was successful, considering the talent level they had, and all the players liked you but most of the parents did not agree with your coaching methods and in return ran you off and forced you to stop coaching their badminton team. If you were asked to compete in this tournament with a team younger in age but as talented if not more would you? Also this tournament is being played on your former teams home court two hours away.

Do you take your chances of dealing with former parents giving you grief for playing in the tournament? What happens if you beat your former team handidly? Discuss.

I say you go ahead and play. You should never put the parents opinion in front of allowing the kids to get better by playing older teams. And if you win maybe it will make the parents realize you did know what you were doing.

Play . To paraphrase Admiral David Farragut at the battle of Mobile Bay " Ignore the Torpedos full steam ahead " .

Heck yes, I'd play! And I'd do my darndest to make sure we won the whole badminton tourney! Then I would act like I had lost my memory of all the bad things that occurred and be the most gracious winner they ever saw.

Play! if you win, so what... you were playing with younger kids, and if you win, great, they should have kept you there.

Either way, you can't lose.

If it will make your kids better than play. It isn't about the parents, it's about the kids.

No doubt about it ...Play!

A coach (any coach anywhere) at somtime or another is going to hear some complaints/trash from some parents or fans. That is an much of an absolute as death, everyone here is going to die and is just a matter of when, not if.

Should the coach feel like it would help his current team then by all means play. I would also think that not all parents from the previous school were against him, usually this is a few that have the least knowledge but carry the loudest mouth (and in some schools, the most loadd billfold / bank acct.)

What it all comes down to is as others have said as well....it's, about the kids, should te coach feel like it would be good for his kids/team then by all means play the tournament.

(also, since it is a former school that he felt he was done wrong after a good job then a win would be extra sweet :D.)

Play, competition is a great thing.

Thanks folks, I knew what I was gonna do to begin with but just wanted to hear some opinions. Glad to see you all agree with me.

I agree play however, do it to coach the kids and let them get some good experience. Don't do it for any revenge factor. Good luck and by the way thanks for taking the time to coach the youth of today. JD
