GT said Pittman looked disinterested in the first HC match up as well....fwiw. The game tempo and HC slowing the ball down and then sitting in a zone the whole game probably had a lot to do with his observations. Just because he didn't score much doesn't mean he was "disinterested." He crashed the boards hard tonight and had several second chance rebounds and rebounds off missed free throws that helped give Holmes extra possessions. He was also posting up A LOT tonight, which is rare from him.

 

Believe what you want...I have a pretty reliable source though and you of all people should know that.

 

I understand the reliable source, I just don't buy his reasoning. I think there is likely more to it. And yes I've heard the Pittman and disinterested combo a couple of times this season.

I went to the Holmes game tonight hoping to see Holmes start kicking it in gear. Quite honestly I didn't see that at all. They're fortunate they played Holy Cross tonight. This is not the same team (right now) that waxed Scott County earlier in the year I don't care what anyone says. This team’s ultimate success will rise and fall on the back of its most substantive player, Ricardo Johnson.

Pittman could have been starting late in the season though. Henley chose not to start him because his defense needed work. It's no coincidence that Holmes starts pressing again and since then Pittman hasn't started in 2 of their 5 games.

 

Got it..I hope he starts when they play Boone or Highlands!

I honestly believe that this team will have the ability to turn it on when they need to. You play a little differently when your back is against the wall. They just beat a top 15 NKY team by over 20. No need for panic mode yet.

At the beginning I chalked it up to youth and immaturity, but after the first couple of times that excuse wore out its welcome. Time to make a statement...it reflects poorly on the program to let a kid get out of hand. I'm positive someone will jump on me for that, but it's the truth.

 

However, I wouldn't call this their biggest game of the season. Although it was a district game and a must win, I don't feel like it was a huge game.

Giwa went up for a shot and got fouled by Arnold, Giwa then walked by Arnold and bumped him with his shoulder so Arnold used his forearm to push him away. Shouldn't have been done and he has to control his emotions but it was more of a case of him getting caught, and not Giwa. The refs weren't even going to call it until the HC crowd went crazy.

When one T is called, no it does not reflect poorly. It is typically an emotion outburst, or a show of youth or immaturity. Arnold has continually had a problem with this correct? Yes it does begin to reflect poorly on the team and the program that something is not done to control it. Discipline or whatnot. I'm sorry if you disagree, and I knew you would, but I do not see how it can be disputed that it can make a team/program look bad. PM me if you'd like to continue this discussion.

I'm not sure how to be more clear about this. Scott County let them run and even tried to outrun them. Holmes looks like a different team when other teams run w/ them. They have learned how to win when a team slows it down on them. They will be fine.

People all have made excuses for the kid all year long, saying that the kid was young and immature.

I can see it happening a couple of times and excuse it for youth. But to see it time and time again and it happens in their biggest game of the year? Come on Wake Up America. It is a problem and youth and immaturity is not a valid excuse.

I would suspend the kid a game, but if I recall correctly, they have already tried that.

I don't know, but I bet the excuses will be coming for the kid.

Back to the game. I am glad I got their early and got to sit with a few of my HC friends in the Billionaire's Row.

I thought that Holmes early shooting and getting to the front was important. HC missed free throws but they have all year, so that is not too surprising. They had some good looks but Holmes pressured the ball pretty well and I think they really made Giwa work.

Give the Bulldogs credit, it was a tough place to open a district and they won in big fashion.

This may have been HC's game of the year I don't think the Bulldogs feel that way. They have their stes on a larger prize.

One player doesn't reflect a whole program, despite what you might think. Henley has disciplined Arnold...running in practice, game time, sitting out of games, etc. I don't think the "program" has anything to do with it, since measures are being taken to discipline the kid.

Just got in from the game...really not much to say.

 

First quarter both teams battled back and forth the first few minutes and we had a tie score at 5-5 after a HC 3. JJ responded at the other end with a 3 and then DJ hit a 3 after a missed HC shot to put Holmes up 11-5 and on a 6-0 run heading in to the second quarter. JJ had 6 of Holmes first 11 points.

 

Second quarter things picked up a little. Both teams again traded baskets, making mini runs on one another the first few minutes. With Holmes up 18-13, a technical foul was called on I believe Arnold after Giwa was fouled. HC made one of four free throws to close within 4 at 18-14, but Holmes would close the quarter on a 10-2 run to give them a 28-16 lead heading in to the locker room.

 

Third quarter things started to get ugly. HC slowed the ball down and began turning the ball over left and right and Holmes would win the quarter 7-6...with most of those points from both coming at the beginning of the quarter. Not sure why but Rico sat out probably 6 minutes of the third quarter. Holmes led 35-22 heading in to the fourth.

 

Fourth quarter Holy Cross would score just 2 points and I'm pretty sure both came on free throws. Altogether HC scored 8 points in the second half. Holmes hit a pair of 3's to build a 19 point lead and a goal by Willie Slusher with around 35 seconds left would give Holmes the final of 45-24.

 

Nobody really stood out, scoring wise for HC. I believe Giwa may have finished with 7 or 8. I will say this though...Holy Cross gets away with A LOT of holds and pushes. Trimpe was pushing and holding pretty much anyone he guarded tonight...particularly Riley early in the game and then Pittman the few times he guarded him late in the game. Anytime a HC player set a pick, you could guarantee a push or hold was coming with it on the player trying to fight through the screen. Very disappointing to see them get away with it so much early in the game. Second half the refs finally started calling it, so HC backed off a little.

 

For Holmes, DJ played a very solid game. Not sure how many he finished with, but know it was in double figures. Holmes press looked pretty good tonight...forced several HC turnovers and IMO was the difference in the game as HC had to work very hard to get the ball across the line which wore them out by mid third quarter.

 

All in all, while it wasn't very pretty, Holmes still gets the 21 point W.

 

Beechwood on Friday for the district championship...I expect a good game.

 

I thought Trimpe played well. Holmes pushed just as much or more than HC

I too have a hard time believing he did not start in a district matchup [regardless of opponent] because of needing a "quicker" lineup or the ability to press.

If he and 34 don't do some maturing quick it could be HHS's downfall. On another note I think Ricardo is a fine kid with a good head on his shoulders, much more a prospect if you judge by character than Pittman.

I think Ricardo Johnson is exactly the type of player the two you speak of should strive to be. Good head on his shoulders, smart basketball player, and just an overall talented athlete.
