Marathon Training - Anyone else have any running stories to report?

There was a reason Pheidippides died after running that far, lol. Good luck

Good luck, I couldn't imagine running for 26 miles.

Could anyone give me some advice on the running? I have recently gotten my old running schedule almost to where I would like it, but how would I go about marathon training? I could always use the boost.

Start your training 16 to 20 weeks out. You need to combine easy runs with some tempo runs and at least one long run a week. You will gradually build on your mileage until one week before where you taper off. Your mileage is all dependent on where you are as a runner now and what kind of mileage you are doing presently.

I really wanna run a Marathon before I die. I just need to start training this summer and in the next few years try one. It's on my list.

Good Luck!

Have you ever tried a half-marathon? I would try it first.

Runnersworld.com and other sites have great training tips from schedules to nutrition. Good shoes are extremely important.

Good luck! Personally, I can't imagine doing anything close to a marathon.

A marathon for me is jogging from the couch to the fridge...

I have a friend who trained with a group here in Louisville. The crazy part was she didn't play any sports in H.S. and never really ran before. She just finished a marathon in Phoenix a little bit ago.
Well, I officially made the plunge and signed up for a full marthon. I have completed both the Derby Festival Half-Marthon and St. Jude's Half-Marthon over the past 10 months, and I have somehow convinced myself I can do the full 26.2 miles. :scared:

I know threetimelover may be in Nashville on April 25th to cheer me on :D

I know we have some that have completed/attempted marathon's before... any helpful advice?

I did 17 miles this past Saturday. I got through it pretty well. With that said, the weather was horrendous. Constant rain and wind left me really contemplating calling someone to pick me up. I made it though

Lucky & I will be on-hand to cheer you on if you make it to Cherokee Park!

Never mind...I just realized you're not running the Derby.

This one is in Nashville so that would be a heck of a long jog up to your neck of the woods :D

Correct. I am older than 3 and not a horse.

In all honesty, the best advice I have to be a good runner is to cross-train and cross-train more.

A lot has to do with the fact I have been running for a few years now, but cross-training helps me more than anything. P90X and Kickboxing are what I do now.

They also say it takes a while to properly learn how to run. Being an experienced runner, I can see where they are coming from when they say this. In other words, you have got to stick with it.

When it comes to marathoning I might disagree with you a bit. I think cross training has it's place for active recovery but for a newbie they need to get use to running and being on their feet for 4 to 5 hours straight. Nothing else can replace training miles.

I'm training for the Flying Pig mini in Cincinnati. I just bought Under Armour's new shoes and love them. Have had no pain in my knees.
