Marathon Training - Anyone else have any running stories to report?

Well, I officially made the plunge and signed up for a full marthon. I have completed both the Derby Festival Half-Marthon and St. Jude's Half-Marthon over the past 10 months, and I have somehow convinced myself I can do the full 26.2 miles. :scared:

I know threetimelover may be in Nashville on April 25th to cheer me on :D

I know we have some that have completed/attempted marathon's before... any helpful advice?

I did 17 miles this past Saturday. I got through it pretty well. With that said, the weather was horrendous. Constant rain and wind left me really contemplating calling someone to pick me up. I made it though

Good luck. I will try a marathon one of these days but not any time soon. Sounds like you off to a good start with the 17 miles in bad weather.

You know, if I didn't have a soccer tourney in Huntsville, AL and a middle school baseball tourney in Hoptown that weekend, I would totally be there at the finish line!

Seriously, good luck to you. I'll be there with you in spirit!:ylsuper:

I have thought about training for a marathon but I will have to work my way up it. I did a ton of running in high school for soccer and know I can get in shape. It's the mental part of it that will be the toughest.

Obviously the pain of it all sucks; but you are right on the mental part. Trying to wrap my head around myself jogging for 4 hours or so (assuming nothing goes wrong), is the biggest battle. Thank god for the iPod.

The other thing I am worried about is "hitting the wall." You read about it all the time and it normally kicks in around the 18-22 mile mark. I packed a ziploc bag full of raisins on this past run. The rain kept my hydrated enough :D

I plan on this being my only time to ever do this. It is a lot of work and time devoted on the weekends.

You are tough. I hate running with a passion. I'm sure I could run around 5 miles right now...but I'd hate every single second of it.

I run a mile every other day just to do it...and I plan on bumping up my total to 1 1/2 miles this week...but I'm going to hate it. A lot...

I used to be in your shoes (no pun intendend), HB20. The iPod really changed some things as far as disliking it and also having a running group helps.

I also use to hate running but after doing it for awhile I got to where I enjoy it. I still don't care for running on a treadmill, which is where I do 90% of my running any more, but love to run outside. I would also agree with bugatti that listening to an ipod really helps.

I have an iPod touch, so IMO running with it is just a hassle. Plus the head phones don't stay in my ears very well while running. Any suggestions?

Mine never fall out. I know they have the type that loop around the back of your ears that can help.

I had the same problem so I bought a pair of head phones that had the pieces that go around your ears, like the ones below.
