February 20, 200917 yr Author I wanted to come up with something challenging but attainable. So this year I decided to stop beating up crippled kids and tricking old ladies out of their pension checks. I think I can give these things up. I gave up BGP two years ago. Let me tell you, it is a terrible time to give up BGP. Well, at least it was when I did. In recounting just UK hoop events from the time I signed off... - UK and Tubby parted ways - Tubby went to Minnesota - Florida won another title - Donovan's pilot told someone's aunt he was accepting the job - Donovan says no - People said Donovan's response was a cover-up and he really was accepting the job - HammerTime started the "Be careful what you wished for thread." - gametime was right... at least told everyone he was right about, well everything - 10 other names come out as a head coaching candidates - People still are waiting for Donovan out at the airport despite being on vacation celebrating his new Florida contract - Billy G. is hired - Patterson signs - I break out in to hives because I cannot read anything about it - Lent ends. Back on BGP with nothing to talk about. It really was March Madness and a good time to be on BGP. (Probably a good reason to give it up for Lent :thumb:) Last night, just to see if other people had done it before, I searched "Lent" and read passages describing both of things that you said. Jim, you gave that up last year. How did it go? Bugatti, I feel for you. I'm sure the equivalent to me is that the threads in P&R will turn to bashing capitalism and Catholicism, and I will be no where to be found.
February 20, 200917 yr Reading posts about "Lent". :idunno: We don't observe the activity. Why not ? A little self sacrifice never hurt anyone ?
February 20, 200917 yr KY....I guess I do "Lent" everyday. :isurrender: Good for you . So should everyone .
February 20, 200917 yr KY....I guess I do "Lent" everyday. :isurrender: Marriage doesn't count as pennance for Lent.
February 20, 200917 yr I'll show her this^^^^. Like I need to fuel the fire. I really think to observe Lent is a really good thing to do. People are reminded what Jesus Christ has done for us and if someone wants to give up something as a sacrifice, why thats beautiful. Cookies are my worst vice. I've fasted many times before and its not the food I miss, ice cold milk/Chocolate chip cookies. The big thick ones or warm from the oven. Maybe I'll try, but need to be prayful to do this.
February 20, 200917 yr I wanted to come up with something challenging but attainable. So this year I decided to stop beating up crippled kids and tricking old ladies out of their pension checks. I think I can give these things up. With that sort of commitment, I am truly not worthy to be in your presence! You are da man!! :notworthy:
February 20, 200917 yr I'm Baptist, but I like the idea behind the tradition. I don't think that "Lent" is what God had in mind when Paul penned I Timothy 4:1-5. Typically, I try to abstain from eating at restaurants (a frequent indulgence), drinking alcohol except red wine, and consuming red meat. Mrs. Hearsay is pregnant so I will not have her submit to any dietary restrictions. I make the two older boys choose an item they over-indulge and explain that when they think of that item to remember the cross. For the oldest it is video games. We have only done this two years. If nothing else at all, it gives the family something to remember Christ about, and I'm all for it. We also usually have big Shrove Tuesday, Palm Sunday, and Good Friday celebrations, and this year, I have invited the deacons over to dinner for Maundy Thursday, men only. Mrs. Hearsay is scheduled for C-Section on Good Friday, so Easter this year will be in the hospital.
February 20, 200917 yr As Catholics we are told that it is done to remember and imitate in a small measure Jesus' 40 days of fasting in the desert .
February 20, 200917 yr PepRock will be giving up soft drinks. If anyone crosses his path on Ash Wednesday or the day after they may be dealing with a grouchy PepRock(more so than usual) while I go through sugar and caffeine withdrawals.
February 21, 200917 yr I wanted to come up with something challenging but attainable. So this year I decided to stop beating up crippled kids and tricking old ladies out of their pension checks. I think I can give these things up.Dude, try not to use the "c" word. :sssh: FYI: But I don't care what you do to the old ladies.
February 21, 200917 yr Marriage doesn't count as pennance for Lent. Yeah; because it's already purgatory...and that would be double dipping.
February 21, 200917 yr Mrs. Hearsay is scheduled for C-Section on Good Friday...Man, now I feel really inadequate just giving up chocolate! That's hardcore.
February 21, 200917 yr In years past I have given up all alcohol (which wasn't nearly as tough as I thought it would be).....I gave up soft drinks the next year, and my wife called hogwash on it, as I don't drink soft drinks but very rarely. I haven't decided what to give up this lent. I think I might go the other direction and dedicate myself to a cause. Don't know yet...the Lord will answer my prayer.
